Spice Lounge – Chatteris

Spice Lounge is a decent indian in chatteris which we thoroughly enjoyed

I’ve been dying to get out to Chatteris over the years to see what it has to offer…and I must say, I wasn’t disappointed!

We had a great meal from Spice Lounge in Chatteris tonight and I look forward to coming back.

The service here has absolutely no sense of urgency, which is not always a bad thing. It gave us time to talk and take in our surroundings while we decided what we wanted. Many restaurants will try and get you in and out, almost like a conveyor belt, which can spoil a dining experience as a whole but not here!

The papadums were uninspiring and probably my least favourite part of the experience. We only got 3 sauces which were lime pickle, mango chutney, and an onion salad. The lime pickle was very smooth which was a really nice touch as it made it easier to spread, though the lime pickle and mango chutney were nothing to write home about in their own right. It would have been great to have has some yogurt along with it but everything just seemed cheap and mass produced.

We ordered tempura prawns for starters and our mains were Dupiaza chicken curry, a Duck Royal Masala, and I had the Chicken Tikka Vindaloo (extra hot) with a saag aloo side. We also had Mushroom Rice and Peshawari Naan.

The food came out in good time which was a contrast to the slow pace when we first came in.

The food was presented in a way which was practical though wasn’t exactly going to win a hipster award for trendiness.

The Peshawari Naan was absolutely fantastic. It was bursting with Peshawari and it was completely covered inside of the naan. I gotta say that it was one of the best I’ve had in a long time.

The Dupiaza was described by Jack as “really tasty and had a nice kick to it”.

Megans Duck Royal Masala was sensational. It was full of flavour and has a nice warmth to it. Even I was picking at it after I had finished the meal!

My vindaloo was very hot and they did a great job at making it a challenge for me to eat. I think they may have sacrificed some of the taste to make it that hot but I got exactly what I asked for, it just didn’t taste as good as some of the others I’ve had. The chicken was tikka’d to a good standard and the meat quality in all our meals was good too.

They had Kingfisher, Cobra, and Mongoose available in bottle, though only Cobra in the large 660ml bottles. Nothing unfortunately on draft.

The interior decorating was pleasant enough to enjoy. The neon lights added a good atmosphere as it got darker.

The team at the Spice Lounge did a great job at maintaining social distancing and complying to Covid PPE protection. I can see that the Spice Lounge serves the small town of Chatteris very well.

I can’t say I was expecting much coming here as I live close by in Sutton but have never heard anyone mention it but I ended up pleasantly surprised. Spice Lounge is certainly worth a visit if you are in the area though can be hard to justify if living on the other of the county.

Chatteris always seems to impress when I come to visit whether it be with Spice Lounge or Pera Palace. This is an exciting town for food and I look forward to seeing what else it has to offer!

Thanks for reading.
