I was back in Norwich this weekend to watch the mighty Canaries smash Huddersfield 2-0. After the game, instead of cramming myself into the train with the hundreds of other football fans, I decided to visit Roti for a curry.
Check out my previous review in Norwich – Spice Valley.

Roti is a great location for people visiting from out of town. It is close to the train station and has free parking in the area. The owners Sammy and Chelsie are both big Norwich FC fans, so it is a popular place for football fans to pop by after the game and celebrate a victory…or comfort eat after a loss.
Roti has a large menu with a wide selection of dishes. This is very much a standard Bangladesh Indian restaurant, so expect all your favourite curries. It was great to also see both Kingfisher and Cobra beer on tap.
The place is very clean, formal, and…white 🤣. Seriously, the walls, tables, everything was white. It didn’t look bad and had a certain class to it but I couldn’t help but feel like it lacked character.
The staff are excellent from the moment we entered and wouldn’t allow us to be without the entire time we were there. I couldn’t fault them.

We ordered some papadums which came with red onion chutney, mango chutney, onion salad, and yogurt. We had to request mixed pickles because they did not come out as standard but they were more than happy to bring this out for us.

The mango chutney was absolutely fantastic. It was bold, sweet, and textured. One of the strongest mango chutneys I have had in a while actually. The onion salad was mostly just onion with a few sprinkles of herbs, very uninspiring but inoffensive. The red onion chutney was very good and the yoghurt was beautifully thick and flavorful.

As I am sure you have already predicted, I ordered my usual favourite – the chicken vindaloo, saag aloo, and mushroom rice.

The vindaloo was a thing of beauty. It looked gorgeous with a deep fiery brown colour that was complimented with a garnish of coriander on top, giving it a lovely green pop.

With these three dishes combined it turned into a plate of glory. The vindaloo was very spicy…spicier than a regular vindaloo. I was quite impressed, as many vindaloos are served mild these days. The chicken was great quality. I found it incredibly tender and juicy. The vindaloo sauce had a lovely smokey flavour that should please anyone who gives it a go. Top marks!

The mushroom rice was absolutely perfect and had a brownish yellowy colour that complimented the red sauce of the vindaloo. I was surprised how generous they were with the mushrooms in the rice too. The saag aloo was on point with a generous portion of perfectly cooked spinach. It mixed really well into the curry and tasted great.
Now, my son also ordered a tandoori mixed grill but the thing was nearly inhaled by the time I got my phone out, so you will have to take my word for it. The grill came out sizzling on a hot plate and was placed on his plate with a large portion of fried onions. The meat was a vivid red colour and fell to pieces when pulled with his fork. He said it was fantastic but didn’t give me a chance to confirm this 🤣
It was hard to fault Roti tonight. The service, food, and quality was all there. Heck, they even did a vindaloo that gave me a run for my money! If you are a foodie looking for traditional Indian cuisine or something a little ‘out there’ then this isn’t for you but if you love a good old fashioned Saturday night curry then Roti is absolutely perfect.
I’m a big fan!
