What supermarket does the best scotch eggs (ranked)

My ‘Supermarket Scotch Egg League Table’ (updated frequently).

Does anyone really want to know this? Nope, but I’m doing it anyway!

I eat a lot of scotch eggs and though there are dozens of great places to get a real scotch egg (like Scotties at Ely Market or the Gog & Magog farm shop). I often find that I am stuck with a choice between two supermarkets while out and about or stuck at work.

So, without further ado, here is a list of my personal favourite supermarket scotch eggs – ranked

1st – Co-op’s own scotch egg.

Co-op’s standard scotch egg was a stand out winner for me upon trying it. Unlike other supermarket scotch eggs, this scotch egg tastes fresh, which is a hard thing to pull off when it’s been packaged. It was juicy yet crispy from start to finish. The sausage meat felt lighter than other brands, suggesting that perhaps it was leaner or lower in fat, implying a higher quality of meat.

2nd – Waitrose essential

Generous light tasting sausage layer, good flavour, generous size, and surprisingly cheap at £1.45 for two. Quite a large yolk inside (somehow).

3rd – Sainsbury’s pork and caramelised onion scotch egg

A nice golden colour with a crispy bread crumb outer shell. A rich caramelised onion taste that adds a bold flavour with a nice complimentary sweetness. A fair thickness of spiced sausage. Expensive for £1.25 but isn’t going to break the bank

4th – Morrisons Deli Counter (chorizo sausage & regular)

Great flavour and an exciting chorizo twist. Decent size but very dry.

5th – Waitrose Deli Counter.

Very similar to Aldi, Tesco, and Morrisons standard scotch egg but had a fresher texture and deeper flavour. I get the feeling that better ingredients were used but the same process.

6th – Morrisons

A fairly standard all round scotch egg which felt like great value for money. Sometimes hard to find and are not always available in store.

7th – Aldi

Great value, as you would expect from Aldi. Nothing wrong with it, which is the best you can hope for with cheaper brands. Nothing exciting or stand out about the experience. A little flat and anemic but enjoyable nonetheless. May not be a good entry into scotch eggs but will serve a big fan of them in their day to day lunches. The sausage layer is slightly thicker than Tesco.

8th – Tesco

Not much to say. A rather generic scotch egg, just slightly more expensive than Aldi. I am more than happy to eat these but it won’t stand out for any reason.

9th – Sainsbury’s

Crap. I expect better from Sainsbury’s. No yolk.

Please let me know if you dispute these results or have some constructive input! I understand people are very protective over their scotch eggs 😂

Thanks for reading.
