I finally caught up with arguably the most popular food van in Cambridge – Steak & Honour!
We completed a popularity poll on the Cambridge Foodies last year asking people their favourite restaurant in Cambridgeshire, with Steak & Honour absolutely smashing the no1 spot by a wide margin.

I visited back in 2018 while supporting my good friend Jim with his wheelchair access blog. We both enjoyed our experience but this was many years ago now and a lot has likely changed since then. Heck, I can barely remember my last visit, so I was excited to pop back and not only see how they are getting on but also find a spot for them on my burger rankings table.

Steak & Honour has a permanent home at the Tivoli pub in Cambridge but they also have a few food vans that can be found across the county. Two common spots in my area are the Cherry Tree in Haddenham and The Bank in Willingham. I decided to catch them on one of their days at The Bank pub as I was passing by. I like it here as it means I can grab a craft beer, if required.

We used their website to order which was an absolute cinch to use. I highly recommend ordering in advance as I was caught out last year at the Haddenham Cherry Tree. I turned up and was told that there was a 2hr wait! 😱 Clearly a testament to their popularity but awkward none the less!
It was me and my boy, so we decided to get a burger and fries each. My son had the regular cheese burger and I had one called ‘Some Like It Hot”.
The cheese burger contained 120g of pasture fed Norfolk beef with a Grain Culture milk bun, American cheese, lettuce, onion, a gherkin, and Heinz ketchup and mustard. All for £9.50.

The cheese burger was a rather polite size but was generously packed with all the ingredients mentioned above. It was juicy, succulent, and immediately inhaled rather than eaten. My boy may only be 13 but he has eaten at most of the top burger joints in the city and said it was “one of the best”.

My “Some Like It Hot” is a spicy take on their burgers. This came with a slightly larger 180g pasture fed Norfolk beef burger with a Grain Culture milk bun. It included American cheese, lettuce, roast pepper, jalapeno relish, and Steak & Honour sauce. This came to £12 for a single or £15.50 for a double. Bacon is an extra £2.
It is a real monster! I ordered a second burger to test whether the buns from Grain Culture could handle it. So many burger joints I visit spend too much time filling the burger that they forget to make sure that the bun can handle it. Steak & Honour is still a messy eat but the burger held its structural integrity throughout.
If I am honest, the burger is not as spicy as I was expecting. I don’t think they are aiming to blow your head off but instead add a warm glow to accompany the flavour, which it does very well. If you are a hot head then you will likely be disappointed but it still worked really well.

The thin cut chips were very basic but absolutely perfect in their simplicity. They were salty, crispy, and delicious. No gimmicks, just good chips. There isn’t really much more to say other than they were a firm reminder that you don’t always need to overcomplicate everything and often the simpler ways are the best.

Steak & Honour clearly put a lot of effort into their burgers. There are no gimmicks or novelties, they just focus on doing things really well. The burgers aren’t going to make your eyes pop out at first sight but your taste buds certainly will. My favourite thing about their burgers has to be the succulent texture. My teeth sunk into their burgers far to easily and despite having a double burger, I could have easily had a second.

I love that they use locally sourced beef from Norfolk and Grain Culture buns. Grain Culture is my favourite shop in Cambridgeshire due to their high quality bakery and I am delighted to see more of them around!
It is going to be a real killer knowing where you put this in my burger chart but it has to be near the top 🤷♂️🫣
It looks like our poll last year was on the money!
