Guerrilla Kitchen – Bao buns @ Eddington

Guerilla Kitchen has been on my radar for a while now. This is mostly because I have never had a steamed bao bun before and I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The box ticking part of my foodie brain needed clarity. Luckily, they were located at Eddington Food Park this evening (which is relatively close by, for me) so, I decided that it was about time I took the plunge and found out.

🅿️ Eddington is purposely designed to be painfully awkward for drivers, with confusing parking restrictions and an uncountable number of speed bumps. I recommend parking at Sainsbury’s or the Madingley Park & Ride. If you are lucky enough to live close enough to Cambridge then I would recommend public transport or cycling.

Guerrilla Kitchen was joined by Azahar food van in the central square outside the Sainsbury’s entrance. This was my first experience at Eddington Square. It had plenty of seating outside which is great in the summer months but it was sadly the middle of winter, so we decided to sit in our car.

The menu was small but everything sounded interesting and exciting. Along with the Bao Buns there was also gyoza (dumplings), tater tots, and prawn toast available. I noticed a section called “feastie boy” that gives you a variety of 3 different bao buns in one box for ÂŁ13. As it was my first time visiting Guerrilla Kitchen I thought this would be a good way of exploring the menu.

Tater Tots in kimchi dressing(?)

The tater tots were fantastic and similar to hash browns. They were crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and came accompanied with what was supposed to be a kimchi dressing but felt more like a cheesy dip? Either way, it perfectly accompanied the tater tots, though for a fiver, I would like to have seen slightly more in the pot, as it was only filled up half way and wasn’t nearly enough.

Left to right: Vegan, chicken, pork

My “feastie boy” set was beautifully presented with each bun having its own distinctive character and a colourful visual pop. There is a lot going on and very exciting for the eye!

Pork Bao Bun

I found the pork to be a little dry. It came with a sauce but it wasn’t quite enough to remedy it. The pork was cut as a generous slab that filled up the bao bin nicely. It had a lovely flavour so you could tell it was quality pork. The bun held together well (which was handy as I was eating in my car) and I would certainly feel comfortable eating this on the go.

Chicken bao bun

The chicken bao buns was the highlight of three. It was sweet and sticky all in one with a lovely crispy skin and a nice juicy centre. If I was to visit again I would likely order 3 of these, though it was slightly messier than the others, proving (once again) that the best food is always the messiest! 🤣

Vegan bao bun

I forgot to check what type of vegan bao buns this was but I think it was the sticky tofu. Either way, it was really good. I am a big meat eater and I know a lot of people out there can be wary of vegan food but I would recommend giving it a go if you are interested in exploring what vegan cuisine has to offer. I really enjoyed the vibrant colours and a diverse mix of flavours that made it feel like there was a carnival going on in my mouth! Beautiful! 🥳

3 pork bao buns

The bao buns were what I have always imagined taking a bite out of the ‘Stay Puff Marshmallow Man’ would be like – soft, fluffy, and savoury (while still being slightly sweet). I had always assumed that they would be quite light but they were heavy enough to be surprisingly filling.

The bao buns are perfect to eat on the go, as they don’t flake and keep their structural integrity together really well. I would have no trouble eating these for any occasion, which makes them a good option for event hire. One of my biggest fears is eating street food while I’m in a snappy suit but I would be comfortable eating these.

My boy had a selection of 3 pork bao buns. He really enjoyed them and said that the spring onions, cucumber, and radish added a really satisfying crunch, while also adding a bit of freshness and a feeling of vitality to the dish.

I gotta say, I loved Guerrilla Kitchen. I can see myself visiting again.

Don’t forget to check out their home kits too!
