Cherry Pit on King Street

Just when you think Cambridge couldn’t get more edgy, it still manages to surprise you! šŸ˜‚

Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

A cafe has just opened on King Street offering a selection of pies, coffee and…vinyl? šŸ˜‚ All with an American 1950’s style theme.

I must admit, the moment I heard about the Cherry Pit, I dropped everything in my schedule to come and visit. Especially since their specialty is cherry pie. Something you rarely see in Cambridge (or the rest of the UK).

The cafe is small but they do wonders with the space. There are several tables placed by the windows, making it a great spot to sit back and watch the world go by.

The menu

Pie is literally all they do. In fact, they even admit they are a little pie crazy on their website. You can’t be crazy for something and be bad at cooking it, so I thought this boded well for the quality. This also means that The Cherry Pit isn’t a place to come for a full meal (unless you want to eat pie by the slice) but more of a place to meet up with friends for a snack or sweet treat.

Options available

• Cherry Pie

• Pumpkin Pie

• Pecan Pie

• Apple pie

• Cheese & Bacon Turnover

• Cream Cheese & Spinach Turnover

GF options available on request.

The cafe opens at 9:30am and closes at 4pm. It is a “first come first served” basis and once it’s gone…it’s gone! Speaking with the team, they explained that they had already sold out of most types of pie by 1pm. They aim to make more pies in the future to mitigate this but remember to stay vigilant or risk being disappointed!

Cherry Pie

I couldn’t visit without trying their signature Cherry Pie and luckily there was one slice left. It can be served with either whipped cream or ice cream as a side portion. The dish is placed on top of the checkered packaging in the box, aptly fitting into the 1950’s theme of the cafe.

The pie had a stunning ruby red colour with a thick and very crunchy pie base that was generously covered in sugary crystals. It was absolutely perfect and one of the sweetest pies I have had in a very long time.

🤫 Rumour has it that pie eating contests could be on the horizon. I’ll see you there!

Pumpkin Pie

My wife had the pumpkin pie which was light, smooth, and lightly spiced, with the same crunchy crust as the cherry pie. The pumpkin added a more earthy taste when compared to a lot of the other options on the menu, meaning that you aren’t just faced with painfully sweet pies as an option. She had never had pumpkin pie before and wasn’t sure whether she would enjoy it but after finishing her slice was won over.

Chocolate Chip Scone

My son ordered the chocolate chip scone. I didn’t get a chance to sample it (otherwise risk losing a finger) but it was consumed at a reassuring rate.

Vinyl with your pie, sir?

A selection of vinyls are on sale along the side wall, with everything from Nirvana’s classic album “Nevermind” to 90’s pop Bewitched. It is a diverse range and a great little nod to the old record store that used to be here (who remembers buying Drum & Bass tape packs in here?). We found it to be a useful thing to distract you while waiting to be served but it also added another dimension to your experience.

Two pies were placed on the window in a display case as a proud monument to pie. If these bad boys aren’t going to make you hungry then nothing will. It was just as well they were placed in a case, as I fear they may have mysteriously ended up with suspicious bite marks in them.

Conclusion

Sushi & Salad, Ely

I’m in love with cherry pie!

The Cherry Pit offers a quirky, fun, and unique dining experience in Cambridge, not found anywhere else in the city. It isn’t suitable for a full meal but is better suited for meet ups, snacks, a sugary pick-me-up…or buying vinyl. I would love to see milkshakes sold here, as I can really picture it fitting into the American diner asthetic.

The cherry pie is absolutely out of this world. I cannot recommend it enough! Get your arse down here asap!
