Breakfast @ Bravo Patisserie, Mill Road

Invite – click here

My family has been a fan of Bravo Patisserie for a while now. My mum pops in frequently to buy their cakes for special occasions. In fact, we had one last Christmas which went down a treat with the family. I sometimes pick up their baklava while trailing down Mill Road too. It is a place that I have always had strong affections for, which is why I was so delighted to be invited for the purposes of the review.

Advert – Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

Little did I know that there is more to Bravo Patisserie than cakes and baklava. They also do a breakfast menu, making it a restaurant/cafe that you can spend some time in rather than picking up cake collections.

The restaurant doesn’t look huge from the outside but is very deep once you get in. It has a nice lounge area in the middle which is small but surprisingly spacious. This is mostly because they have not tried to cram in as many tables and chairs as possible. This made manoeuvring and parking my son’s pram a breeze and the dining experience less claustrophobic (especially in comparison to other Mill Road restaurants). This gives Bravo Patisserie a very relaxed atmosphere and makes it a great meeting place for friends and family while enjoying coffee and some cake.

Studying their menu, I could see their signature Mediterranean Turkish breakfast, toasties, bagels, scrambled eggs, coffee, teas, milkshakes, smoothies, and a wide selection of cakes and desserts on the back. I also noticed gelato at the entrance too.

The Mediterranean Turkish breakfast was the stand out dish on the menu which we simply had to try. It really is the full monty, as you get a real diverse selection with it. This ranges from olives to salad, a selection of cured meats, a basket of bread, scrambled egg, hummus, and cheeses. It felt indulgent without being heavy and great to share…everything a breakfast should be!

The salad which came with the breakfast was bold and vibrant. It was not only fresh but added a real colourful pop to the spread. I was a real fan of the salad leaves which went with everything else from the breakfast.

The grilled beef sausage was absolutely fantastic and complimented the cheddar and mozzarella perfectly when used within their crusty bread. There is hummus, which is always a welcome addition to any meal, along with fried vegetables called saksuka.

Menemen

We quite rightly accompanied our Turkish breakfast with a Turkish coffee. I also tried my first ever menemen dish alongside the Turkish breakfast. This is essentially a mediterranean style of scrambled egg. This was one of the highlights of my visit and stood out as one of my personal favourites today. I’ll be having this again for sure! It consists of tomato, green pepper, onion, and scrambled egg with spices. It was flavorful, light, and the spices gave it that little extra excitement. The presentation in the metal dishes with the brass handles were a really nice touch too.

The breakfast also came with a selection of jam, honey, and butter to accompany the bread. There was so much variety that we didn’t feel a tremendous need for these (other than the butter) but it was still good to have the option. The olives were lovely but fairly standard, though it didn’t stop me from finishing them all.

Unsurprisingly, there is a large dessert menu on the back with approximately 18-20 different options available. Prices range from £4-5 each. Expect classics, such as black forest gateau, red velvet cake, tiramisu, and cheese cake. They are also Oreo and Ferrero Rocher cakes.

Tiri Liche or “milk cake”

We had the Tiri Liche or “milk cake”, one of their best sellers. This is a vanilla cake soaked in three different types of milk, and cream, topped with caramel and pistachio. This was a really exciting discovery for me as I have had nothing like this before. It was understandably milky, soft, refreshing, and light. Speaking to the team at Bravo Patisserie, they explained that this is one of their most popular dishes, I recommend you try it on your visit!

The star of the dessert show, however, has to be the red velvet cake. This monster is a two tiered homemade cake filled with cream, chocolate chips, strawberries and chocolate sauce. This tower of pure beauty was absolutely flawless and enough for two people to share! In fact, it was so good that it had my wife and I fighting over it towards the end! I also thought £5 was an absolute steal for the quality, especially when you consider what you get for a dessert in other restaurants for a fiver these days.

…and last but by no means least, we decided to order a cake to take home for my son’s birthday. He is a big fan of Oreos, so we decided to indulge him with one of their Oreo cakes.

The cake cost £22 and is supposed to serve 6 people but we found that after serving 5 of us that we still had half the cake left! These portion measurements are very unfair on themselves and I would say that you could at least serve 8. Maybe they were anticipating that people wouldn’t be able to stop at one slice? 🤣

The cake was loaded with strawberries and chocolate flakes. It was not stodgy in the slightest and held it’s structural integrity together really well, which is always a sign of quality. It was obviously very sweet but not overly so (like with cakes you may get at supermarkets). The strawberries were juicy and flavorful and the Oreo biscuits were not crunchy and hard but softer which made the cake much easier to eat and very creamy on the bite.
