Back to Trinity (Trinity Street)

My sister and I popped back to Trinity for a spot of dinner.

I was blown away by the quality during my last visit and was expecting more of the same from their high-quality fusion cuisine. I was also keen to experience the marvellous customer service from last time that proved itself to be not just highly attentive but informative, warm, and witty.

We started off with some garlic focaccia and a selection of “Trinity traffic lights”, that come in the form of vinegar and oil. These were accompanied with a couple of juicy olives.

The deep red one was a raspberry and scotch bonnet that gives a lovely fiery kick. For a spice loving hot head like me, this was right up my street. It was also nice to see something spicy in a sophisticated restaurant like Trinity as this is something that gets overlooked in the finer places.

The one in light yellow was onion vinegar which was my personal favourite. It offered a sharp flavour that really appealed to the sour lover in me.

Last, in the orange, was the tomato oil that was my sister’s personal favourite. This was a good option for someone who perhaps doesn’t like the two other extremes of onion and a scotch bonnet and prefers something more balanced.

All the wine at Trinity was absolutely superb. Especially with a really involved team that makes the effort to get to know you and understand what you like before they make a recommendation. I have not had this level of customer service from a restaurant in a while (and this was exactly the same during my last visit too). We were also shown an English sparkling wine that had a real depth of flavour. I have always wanted to explore more of what wine can be produced within the UK, so this was really interesting and informative.

We shared a starter between us called the ‘pork belly goujon’. Similar to a very large fish finger in appearance, it came with pickles and sweet potato. This was a great size to share between two and was absolutely delicious as well as having a lovely crispy exterior followed by a nice soft centre. Texture, flavour, presentation, this had it all!

The next starter was a beautifully presented vegan dish called the ‘slow cooked celeriac, pumpkin seed & celery dressing, laksa’. I have never shied away from vegan dishes and this is another perfect example of what vegan cuisine can be. I was particularly fond of the pumpkin seed and celery dressing that was thick and creamy.

Pork belly

For our mains we decided to split two dishes between us. The first was a ‘slow roasted pork belly, pickled mussels, parsley sauce, and ghee potatoes’ with sweet potato. As you can see from the picture above, this was beautifully presented and the pork was executed perfectly. The cracking was nice and crispy with a soft and very succulent layer of pork underneath. The parsley sauce was generous and offered a really nice flavour that complimented the pork well. This may be the highlight of the evening for me.

We then moved onto ‘pan roasted chicken supreme, cauliflower puree, bacon and new potatoes’. The chicken was exceedingly juicy and bursting with flavour. I would liked to have seen a few more vegetables on the plate but otherwise it was excellent.

Banana Cake

For dessert we had a banana cake and ice cream each. This was surprisingly light, which was very much welcomed after everything we had eaten tonight. The portion was large too and in hindsight was enough for us to share between us. I really enjoyed the colours chosen for the presentation on this dessert with dark and light browns, different shades of red, and cream which gave off a very autumn feel.

As usual, it was a wonderful evening with a warm and very knowledgeable service in sophisticated surroundings. You’d expect Trinity to be expensive with this level of quality but two courses are £26 and three courses are £30. This is, in my opinion, is completely reasonable.

Everything lived up to the previous visit and Trinity is quickly becoming one of my favourite restaurants in Cambridge. It is the perfect place for special occasions but due to its high-end look with a casual feel, the restaurant is also suitable for more frequent visits. My sister was especially taken by Trinity and is already planning her return.
