Sabro’s – burgers from Soham

Throughout my journey to find the best burger in Cambridgeshire, I have had numerous people on the Cambridge Foodies recommend that I visit a food van called Sabro’s.

Advert – Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

Located behind The Fountain pub in Soham, Sabro’s has a neat little arrangement where you can order your food and eat it in the pub. This not only saves you from eating in the unforgiving elements or your car, but is particularly handy for people like me who will travel long distances to visit a food van. This meant that I could sit in the warm with adequate lighting and enjoy a cold pint with my meal. Lovely!

The lads are friendly and can’t do enough for you. Several people were in the queue before me and all of them decided to eat in the pub. Both times the team offered to take the food in for them when it was ready, essentially giving you a table service. Not bad!

The menu had a good selection for a food van, with 7 burgers in total (one being a vegetarian). The sides section is where the menu really shines however, with a variety of interesting dishes, such as, “blazin shrimp”, “pulled pork taquitos”, and their “pulled pork loaded fries”. Prices were competitive, with the burgers ranging from £9.50-11.50.

I asked for their signature burger, so they recommended the “Smokey Samson”. I can never resist pulled pork, so I also picked up their Pulled Pork Loaded Fries and some Blazin Shrimp, for good measures. I grabbed myself a table in the pub, ordered myself a pint, and got stuck in!

So much for dry-January and my post-Christmas diet! 🤦‍♂️

The burger

All their burgers come in a foldable cardboard box, which is perfect for transport but is also very easy to undo. Once the box unfolded, I was presented with a real monster of a burger that came with a double patty, American cheese, maple streaky bacon, house crispy onion, and BBQ sauce.

What a sight to behold!

The BBQ sauce is very rich and the maple streaky bacon gives the burger a subtle sweetness. The American cheese does its usual job of melting everything together in a gooey loveliness and the double patty is the crowning touch. The brioche bun does a great job of holding the burger together with no problems with the structural integrity.

Juic’it Up – Mill Road

The house-crispy onion not only makes this burger look huge but gives it a tremendously satisfying crunch on the bite. The crispy onion makes the burger look slightly bigger than it is and shrinks down significantly when you bite into it but will be enough to satisfy everyone but the biggest appetites. If you are one of those people (like me) then I recommend a side to go with it. Luckily, there are loads of great side options.

Loaded fries

The Pulled Pork Loaded Fries came with Sabro’s house seasoned fries, cinema cheese sauce, parmesan and gouda, Sabro’s house pulled pork, crispy bacon bits, crispy onion, and my choice of sauce – garlic mayo.

The pulled pork loaded fries were out of this world!

In fact, they were so good, I cannot think of a better example of loaded fries in my life! Granted, I am not judging from a generous wealth of experience but it was delicious in an unapologetically trashy way.

The pulled pork was a generous portion and impossibly juicy, the chips were nice and salty, and the crispy onion really gave it a crunchy pop. The cinema cheese perfectly married everything together in a thick cheesy goo.

My favourite thing about the loaded chips was the texture; with the succulent pulled pork, the melted cheese, and the crispy onion that just made everything feel rawghhnomnomnom…pure indulgence.

The prawns

The prawns were fried and covered in a spicy coating. It was an interesting option to have on the menu and made me feel like there was more choice other than beef, cheese and carbs. It was presented with a lime for dressing and a delicious hot honey and buffalo dip. The prawns themselves were nice but didn’t jump out as anything particularly special but the sauce really brought them to life with a sweet creamy flavour with a hint of smokiness that worked really well with it.

Conclusion

I’m a big fan of Sabro’s!

The menu is interesting with some great options available other than burgers and chips. There is enough here to explore the menu with multiple visits, giving you a reason to return again and again. The guys are really approachable and understand what it means to offer customer service beyond the expectation of a food van. The food is fantastic and I guarantee that nobody will leave feeling disappointed. The packaging is really easy to use and open, prices were fair, and the arrangement with the pub gives you options that most food vans can’t offer.

It will be hard to decide where it goes on my burger league table, as there is so much more to get excited about with Sabro’s than just the burger.
