Breakfast @ Lot 25 (Auctions Cafe), Willingham

It has been a while since my last visit to Lot 25. I’m not sure why, as it’s always a great experience every time I visit, whether it be watching live football or enjoying a BBQ class. I always leave feeling good and Lot 25 seems to have something new to offer every time I pop by.

It was a beautiful morning, so I decided to take my family out for breakfast.

Willingham is a perfect location for people like myself, who live north of Cambridge and have few high quality breakfast options in the area.

We were seated in their rather pleasant cafe. It is a very long building with wooden tables going the entire length of the restaurant. There was lots of light and the interior is tastefully decorated throughout. I was quite fond of the fairy lights and greenery hanging from the wooden beams.

We started off with a flat white coffee. This came served with some sort of rustic biscuit. The coffee was quite bitter which some people will either love or hate. Nothing a bit of sugar can’t solve either way (though I’m quite partial to bitter coffee myself).

The menu was fantastic, with a great selection of dishes, ranging from the “auction breakfast” (English breakfast), eggs Benedict, and American style pancakes.

An ‘Auction Vegetarian” breakfast is also available, as well as granola, pastries, cakes, and a kids menu.

Speaking of the children’s menu. This is a very child friendly place. I saw numerous families with their children who were all drawing with their crayons and paper provided by the cafe.

Auction breakfast

The auction breakfast

My wife went for an Auction Breakfast. This consists of two rashers of smoked back bacon, local butchers sausage (Highgate Butcher – Willingham), a free range egg, two hash browns, field mushrooms, baked beans and a grilled tomato. This is then served with a choice of white, multigrain sourdough or gluten free toast. My wife opted for the multigrain toast which was lovely, thick, and earthy.

The eggs were executed perfectly. They burst open and oozed all over everything on the plate. It was beautiful!

The sausages were described as “nice and meaty” by my wife and their tomato was godly in its size and succulent.

I had a big appetite and knew that only the Auction Breakfast would be enough to fill me up. I didn’t want to order the same thing as my wife because I wanted to explore the menu for the purpose of this review. So, in an entirely selfless act, I ordered two breakfasts – the eggs Benedict and the American pancakes.

You’re welcome! 😂

American pancakes

The American pancake stack come with several options.

• Banana and whipped cream

• Bacon and maple syrup

• Berries and whipped cream

• Salted caramel and banana

I ordered the classic bacon and maple syrup, as it has always been a favourite of mine. The stack comes with 4 small and thick pancakes with several cut rashers of bacon. This is then generously topped with maple syrup and powdered sugar. I was right to order a second breakfast, as I don’t think this would have filled me up on its own (keeping in mind I’m a big chap!).

It was simple and well executed, a classic example of the famous dish. The bacon was of high quality and had a good pancake to bacon ratio.

How many times have you ordered bacon on pancakes and had two measly strips on your plate? Not here!

Look at that! This was more like bacon with pancakes. 😍

Eggs Benedict

The eggs Benedict came with four options.

• Spinach (v)

• Lime and chilli avocado (v)

• Salmon

• Gammon

Naturally, I picked the gammon and I wasn’t disappointed.

As with the bacon on my pancakes, the gammon was served as a generous portion. The rashers were sticking out in all directions. The hollandaise sauce was liberally poured all over and lightly garnished for a bit of colour. The eggs were poached and cooked perfectly.

I love eggs Benedict and will admit that I don’t have it often but this was one of the best examples of the dish I have had.

Conclusion

Everything at Lot 25 was executed perfectly this morning. Expect all your classic breakfast options with great care put into the preparation, presentation, and sourcing. The service is excellent, warm, and attentive and prices were fair for the quality.

Lot 25 seems to grow every time I visit, with the new BBQ School now fully up and running, the garden centre, the bar area, and the cafe. It truly has something for everyone. I feel lucky to have such a great place so close to home.

I’ll be making sure to come back again real soon!
