Wonky Kitchens @ The Cambridge Blue, Gwydir Street

Farewell, Gorilla & Lamb. Hello, Wonky Kitchen!

Nestled in the award-winning Cambridge Blue pub on Gwydir Street, Wonky Kitchens has replaced Gorilla & Lamb, bringing a fresh perspective to the popular smash burger trend.

The signature Wonky Burger features two patties, topped with tangy Belgian beer pickles, spicy cowboy butter, and smoky Monterey Jack cheese. Served with skinny fries, fennel, and homemade coleslaw, making it a complete and balanced meal.
Wonky Kitchens is committed to local sourcing.

Lalbagh Indian Restaurant, Bourn

Their patties come from the butcher on Mill Road, the buns are baked at Norfolk Street Bakery, and all produce fun their menu is supplied by Barsby Produce. This focus on local ingredients puts the community at the very heart of their menu, guaranteeing both freshness and quality.

The ciabatta-style bun is a real standout, offering exceptional structural integrity. It effortlessly holds this beast of a burger together, so you can eat it without a single worry. In fact, the bun is so strong I would feel confident making enthusiastic hand gestures with it! 🤣

Tradizioni, Mill Road 🇮🇹

While the bun’s density can make the burger a bit dry, the generous helping of melted cheese does a great job of mitigating this. The accompanying thin-cut, skin-on chips were absolutely perfect, with a wonderfully salty flavour and crispy texture.

Chicken Burger (“gifted”)

During my visit, I was live streaming my experience on Instagram in The Cambridge Blue garden (watch here). During this stream, I was presented with a “free” burger by the chef who must have known I was coming or recognised my name on the order.

The chicken burger features a massive piece of fried chicken that stuck out in every direction. A delicious chilli jam and pickled hot peppers provide a sweet and mildly spicy flavour, while the sturdy ciabatta-style bun holds everything together perfectly – a crucial feature for such a large piece of chicken.

While the generous amount of gooey cheese couldn’t fully prevent the chicken from being a bit dry, the burger was still a triumph. It is a brilliant example of how to build a well-constructed burger, a feat many places fall flat. With the addition of a real thick and plentifully doused sauce, this exceptional creation would be taken to dizzying new heights.

Coleslaw

The coleslaw was an absolute standout with my sister and I both raving about its beautiful purple colour that popped straight off the plate and its creamy, yet crunchy, texture. This made it a perfect accompaniment to the burger and chips.

Burgers & Beer

Sushi & Salad, Ely

Wonky Kitchens is a worthy successor to Gorilla & Lamb, which was previously one of my favourite burger spots in the city. Wonky not only rivals that quality but does so with its own distinctive style. Their burgers are everything you could want while enjoying a pint – big, dense, and full of complex flavours that would impress even the most cynical connoisseur. This commitment to quality, combined with their strong focus on local sourcing, makes them the perfect partner for The Cambridge Blue’s superb selection of Belgian beers, local craft brews, lagers, and ales. It is a truly ultimate partnership.
