13 Weeks – Nigerian food on King Street

King Street has gained a fantastic new independent spot and it brings a completely fresh concept to the city centre.

When you spend your days looking at local menus, you start to notice a lot of repetition, but 13 Weeks Cafe is doing something genuinely unique. The hook behind the name is that their menu evolves every thirteen weeks to cycle through fresh, globally inspired flavours. It is a brilliant strategy because it gives you a constant excuse to keep returning to see what they are cooking up next. Crucially, while the dishes rotate, the menu always keeps the core essence of its West African and Nigerian cuisine at its heart, alongside reliable staples like their jerk chicken and freshly baked banana bread.

The space itself is relaxed and heavily travel-inspired, making it a great spot if you want to settle in for some remote working or just enjoy a casual lunch. It is run by the lovely Bonno, who is always up for a friendly chat and makes you feel instantly welcome. She told me that she wants to bring the community feel back to the café scene, where people slow down, talk, and enjoy each other’s company. As someone who is definitely guilty of sitting, eating, and then leaving, I can definitely appreciate the importance of this. In fact, considering they have only been open a few weeks, they already have a loyal following of regulars.

Menu

The current menu rotation has a massive focus on West African and Caribbean flavours, and I didn’t hold back.

I started with the slow-cooked, party-style Nigerian jollof rice bowl, which comes served with diced beef and a fresh side salad. This dish was absolutely superb. It was bold, deeply aromatic, and carried a proper kick of spiciness – exactly the way I like it! Finding authentic jollof rice right in the historic heart of Cambridge is a massive win, and they have absolutely nailed the depth of flavour here.

Jerk Chicken

Next up was their jerk chicken panini. Interestingly, while the online menu mentions a baguette, today it was served on incredibly soft, beautifully toasted bagels. It came loaded with grilled halal chicken breast, mixed vegetables, tomatoes, mayo, and melted cheese. It wasn’t overly fiery in terms of heat, but the jerk seasoning was fantastic and the whole thing was packed with vibrant colour.

Drinks

To wash it all down, they have an excellent selection of drinks that you rarely see on a standard high street run. Alongside their quality teas, they proudly serve Coffee World – the family-owned, Milton-based roaster that has been going since 1984 and is already a massive favourite within the Cambridge Foodies community.

On the colder side of things, they stock imported Nigerian Fanta, which has that nostalgic, proper sugary taste and a slight thickness you no longer get with British Fanta. It was great to see Malta Guinness available too, something you only see occasionally in Cambridge, making 13 Weeks feel like it is truly offering something new.

Fresh, new, and exciting

It is always exciting to see a new independent opening that brings something genuinely distinct to the table. Bonno has built a wonderful, vibrant little sanctuary on King Street, and with the menu due to flip to change in a few weeks again, I will definitely be heading back to see what comes next.
