I was really excited to finally visit ‘La Maison Du Steak’ on Hills Road. It has been on my list for years but for one reason or another it has always managed to escape me. Not tonight however, as we finally decided to take the plunge and find out why it’s so popular.

La Maison Du Steak is a family run restaurant. You may remember their popular French cafe that unfortunately closed back in 2019, Le Gros Frank. There aren’t a tremendous amount of French restaurants in Cambridge (unless you look towards chains like Cote and Cafe Rouge) so I was really excited to see what a small independent could do and what it offers the city.

The restaurant is cosy and intimate with a stylish yet traditional interior. The wooden tables give it a real steakhouse feel but as you look at their menu, you’ll immediately notice that there is so much more to Le Maison Du Steak than just steak.
The menu is divided up into all the different selections of meat on offer, from fish, beef, chicken, and lamb. Under beef you’ll notice dishes like burgers and briskets, under chicken you’ll see rotisserie chickens and under lamb you’ll see shanks. It’s very much a big meat restaurant but there are a few vegetarian options, including tofu and a Portobello mushroom burger.
It has taken me a long time to get here, I had heard a lot about their tomahawk steaks and I had quite an appetite on me, so I decided to go for it! Let’s go crazy, let’s go nuts! 😎

Their tomahawk steaks are 35 days aged, Himalayan salt dried, and come to £49 for 950g. I think this is good value for a tomahawk steak considering the prices of similar ones in the city. ‘Riverside Bar Steakhouse & Grill’ for example, comes to a slightly smaller 900g (32oz) for £84. ‘Mina Steakhouse’ hovers around £65 (though I’m unsure on the weight).
If money is very much an object for you then I am not aware of a better value tomahawk steak in the city (though, as we all know, you often get what you pay for with steak, so I was keen to see what you get for your money).

The steak looked fantastic and is presented on a slate with chips and a salad. It was great to see the salad included in this, completing a balanced meal in one. I requested the steak medium rare, though if I’m honest, I would say it was closer to rare. This did not phase me but Sean requested his to be taken back and cooked further, which they were more than happy to do.

The waitress was really helpful, and gave good advice on how the steak should be cooked – medium rare. The steak was seasoned really well and the bone marrow cream (sold as a sauce for some reason) was tasty.
The chips were amazing. The steak was a little underdone the first time around but they were happy to give it a little longer, after I sent it back to the kitchen. I wish I went for a more refined cut, better suited to cooking in a restaurant environment.

Shamefully, a near kilo steak, salad, and fries, wasn’t enough for me, so I ordered some ‘mac & cheese’ on top, which is a dish I have really been enjoying lately (especially now winter is approaching). I thought it was a good all rounder take on the classic dish.

It was great to see local brewery Calverly’s available in the restaurant too. I forgot to ask which specific beer this was but it was a lovely crisp lager. It’s always great to see independent local businesses supporting each other.

The service was exceptional, and the crowd was awesome too. I had a tiny gripe and they fixed it immediately, and for me, that’s the mark of an excellent restaurant. I’d like to know how they cook their chips, because they were immensely good. The coleslaw (often overlooked) was also outstanding, so outstanding I finished it, which is incredibly rare for me.

We had a lovely meal and unsurprisingly everyone left feeling absolutely stuffed. If you are very fussy about how you want your steak then you may feel disappointed with our experience but this didn’t phase me, personally. The team was more than happy to rectify this without any qualms. The beer, mac and cheese, the salad, and chips were all really good and there are so many exciting dishes on the menu that I feel obliged to return and explore it further.
The only trouble now is…I feel like I need to try all the tomahawk steaks in the city! Damn my brain!
Thanks for reading.
