Located opposite the Abbey Stadium on Newmarket Road is The Grill Brothers, a takeaway restaurant offering an assortment of kebabs, burgers, meze, and wraps.

Advert – Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn.

The Grill Brothers is in a great location. Mostly because it is not a huge battle to get to from outside the city and even has customer parking around the back. There is also residential parking close by too. For a takeaway, this is important as you want to be able to rock up and collect without the usual parking faff you get with Cambridge. It is perfectly located for the football too, so you can pop in before or after the game and enjoy quality food without having to suffer the dreaded stadium hotdog.

The restaurant has an unusual interior made of chipboard. I think this is aiming to go for that rustic BBQ look. This won’t be to everyone’s taste but fundamentally, it is practical, with a good selection of bar stools for people wanting to pop in for a bite to eat on the go.

The menu is large with a wide selection of food available. In other words, there is something for everyone here. If I picked out individual dishes then I would need to return at least 5 times to explore the menu properly.

Luckily, there are also some eye catching promotions, including “The Grill Brothers Jumbo Mix’. This is a meal deal for 4 people with a diverse selection of items across their menu. This felt like a good choice, as it has a little bit of everything.

For £29.99 we got 4 pieces of lamb shish, 4 pieces of chicken shish, lamb doner meat, chicken shawarma, 2 lamb chops, 2 pieces of kofta, 2 side salads, 2 soft beads, and a large chips. This comes to a mere £7.50 per person, which is unbelievable value!

All the packaging is in recyclable carboard  containers.

I must admit, the presentation was excellent for a takeaway. The boxes were absolutely packed and the side salad and herbs used in the meat gave the otherwise beige coloured food a welcome pop. I was delighted to see a few chilies, along with some garlic and chili side sauces too. Hummus was also provided and I was given a naga sauce on request (though the naga is usually for their ‘Wing Brothers’ side of the shop).

The lamb chops here are excellent. Both were not only a good size but also had very little fat. This is partly thanks to the lamb chops being ‘French trim cut’ which removes a lot of the fat during preparation. This is something commonly done by high-end restaurants. Clearly a sign of their attention to details and a homage to quality.

I am a big fan of their doner kebab meat. This is every day kebab meat you would expect from any takeaway but it is lighter on the grease and very juicy. As the old joke goes, you can only eat a kebab when you are drunk (because it is so cheap and nasty) but I had no trouble devouring this. I found this a clear step above the rest I have had over the years. Top marks!

The doner kebab meat comes accompanied with two soft breads which are made fresh in house. This gives a really light, fluffy texture. You can do a lot with these which adds versatility to the meal, such as using it as a kebab with the doner meat or dipping it in the hummus provided.

The bread is quite thick, which means it has the strength to hold together well if using it as a kebab. How many times have we been in that awkward ‘disintegrating kebab’ situation? Not here!

The lamb shish is also fantastic. It is a big portion shredded into tiny pieces, which makes it is very easy to share between a group. There were mostly succulent bits of lamb in mine but there was also some satisfying crispy chunks that made the bite pop with flavour and added a great texture.

The lamb kofta (pictures at the very top in the picture above) was anticlimactic. You get two of these in a box and they are quite large and easily shareable between four people. I found them quite tough and very dry. A stark contrast to everything else in the box. These can be saved by the garlic sauce and the excellent salsa (which may be one of the best salsa’s I have had from a takeaway) but on their own felt underwhelming. I would love to see the salsa served in bigger portions to buy for home use as it is that good!

The chips were a welcome addition and served us well but it was salad that particularly stood out. It made the meal more balanced nutritionally, visually more pleasing, and was much fresher than other takeaway salads I have visited over the years. So big credit to The Grill Brothers because I think a lot of places overtook the importance of salad and it often gets neglected for the meat.

The chicken and lamb shish were done well and served in large chunks. The chicken was particularly succulent and juicy. I really enjoyed these with the garlic sauce. The lamb was quite tough and inoffensive.

By the end of the meal between the three of us, we had a lot left over and we were all thoroughly defeated. There is no doubt that this could happily serve 4 people. Even between 3 people this was not a bad deal for a tenner each.

I am a big fan of The Grill Brothers. Their doner kebab meat and shawarmas are particularly excellent. The sauces and salad are also stand out favourites, especially when compared to other kebab shops and takeaways. The team here is not only a friendly bunch but confident in what they do and rightly so. The quality is top of the range in Cambridge and their set menus like the ‘mega mix’ and the ‘jumbo mix’ are absurd value for money.
