As part of my quest to find the best pizza in Cambridge, I recently popped into Scott’s on Mill Road to try their “best pizza in Cambridge”.
During my last visit however, I foolishly visited during the afternoon, not realising that said pizza was only served during the evening. This meant that I had to settle for their sourdough pizza (which turned out to be very good in its own right) but it did mean that I had to return tonight to finally get my hands on it.
Oh well, so be it! 🤣

What makes Scott’s “best pizza in Cambridge” so special? It’s Detroit style! 😎 Meaning, it is served in a very deep pan and in a rectangular shape. This, as far as I am aware, is not served anywhere else in the city and is something I am a big fan of ever since my first experience with Detroit style pizza last year.
As we have already visited Scott’s twice already (once for their ‘bottomless brunch‘ and another for their sourdough pizza) I will leave out a lot of the details out about the restaurant and just focus on the pizza.
I was once again joined by Cambridge Foodies moderator Gerry to keep me company during my meal. I ordered the pepperoni and he ordered the ham and pineapple.
Both came to £16 each, which is towards the top end of pizza prices in the city but is by no means an outlier. The staff warned us that the Detroit style pizza takes a little longer to cook than their regular pizza but we felt like it came out in good time.

The pizza is a sight to behold. It is served as you would expect, in a rectangle shape and is cut into four corners to eat with your fingers.
The pizza is a mix of mozzarella and cheddar cheese with tomato sauce, pepperoni, basil, parmesan and hot honey.
My first impression was the quality of the pepperoni which was absolutely excellent. Scott’s is well known for locally sourcing its ingredients as mentioned in our previous reviews. There was no mention of it on the menu this time but I wonder if this was from the Mill Road butcher across the road?

Gerry astutely pointed out that there was very little tomato sauce on the pizza, which is something I had not realised until he mentioned it. This did not seem to affect the taste or texture but is something worth pointing out.
The hot honey really adds a nice texture to the pizza and a really subtly sweet flavour. I thought this was a nice touch.
I enjoyed the fact that the Detroit style pizza base is almost entirely covered in toppings too. So many pizzas around Cambridge are serving these large crusts with a very small centre for the toppings, which leaves me feeling duped or at least with a very dry pizza. This often results in me needing to buy a side sauce just so I don’t have to eat a dry crust, therefore adding to the total cost of my meal. Not at Scott’s though, the Detroit style pizza is covered from edge to edge!

With my previous experience eating Detroit style pizzas the base is very thick and heavy. At Scott’s the pizza base was very light and fluffy. I must say, I prefer it this way. After my meal, I was not only full but I didn’t feel that sluggishness afterwards. Everything felt premium, not only with the base but with the toppings on top.

Gerry’s ham and pineapple was well received with no complaints. In fact, he struggled to finish the entire pizza, further demonstrating its portion size.

We ordered some buffalo wings on the side. These, as you would expect, are chicken wings tossed in buffalo sauce, served with a blue cheese sauce. For £7.50 I thought the portion sizes were generous and enough for two people to share. Personally, I prefer BBQ sauce but the buffalo sauce had a nice kick to them and did a great job of making sure the chicken was not too dry.

The blue cheese sauce was absolutely out of this world! I found myself dipping the remaining crust of my pizza into it throughout the meal. There are chunks of blue cheese floating around in the sauce which really made it taste incredible. Absolutely superb! I’ll be thinking about this for days.

So this leaves the question, are Scott’s Detroit style pizzas the best in Cambridge? It’s a bold claim and a hard thing to honestly say until I have finished my Simon’s Quest pizza journey but at the time of writing, as things currently stand, my honest answer has to be…yes!

Now, I know this is entirely subjective and this may change in the future as I explore and update my pizza league table but currently, this is not only a truly unique pizza experience in Cambridge but is executed very well. The ingredients are quality, there are three types of cheese, and the pizza base is light and fluffy, giving it a lovely texture and less of a heavy/bloated feeling afterwards. The pizza is generously covered in topping and you can even enjoy a craft beer while you dine. For me, Scott’s have absolutely smashed this out of the park!
Just remember, it is only served in the evening! 🤣
League table updated.
