Grill Plug is still awesome and only getting better!

Grill Plug has been open in Cambridge for nearly a year. During my last visit I was thoroughly impressed with their smash burgers, which were some of the first in the city (and also some of the best, in my opinion).

I was lucky enough to be invited back to explore their menu further and get a better understanding of what they are about. Their menu has expanded since my last visit and they have also had a chance to refine their recipes.

I was also excited to hear that Grill Plug will be starting a food van soon, due to make its first appearance at the Mill Road Winter Fair (so, make sure to keep an eye out for their prominent black and yellow logo).

Left: The chicken burger. Right: 3 on 3

We started off with these two incredible delights – the ‘3 on 3’ and the ‘Spicy Chick’ chicken burger. Just by looking at them I immediately noticed that things have changed since my last visit. They both look more robust, vibrant, and the roll has changed.

3 on 3

This absolute monster is the ‘3 on 3’. It consists of 6 x 2oz Angus beef patties with American cheese, gerkins caramelised onions, lettuce, ketchup and mustard. Frankly, I was amazed that the burger bun was able to hold this together but it did a fantastic job and as a result I was able to devour this bad boy with little trouble.

The ‘Spicy Chick’ burger was the stand out favourite during my visit. It comes with buttermilk fried chicken thigh with buffalo drizzle, ranch sauce, American cheese, lettuce, red onion, and their house mayonnaise.

The fried chicken was nice and crispy on the bite but the ranch sauce also added a flavorful, bold, creamy texture that really brought the burger together in a perfect way. This would be my personal recommendation for anyone looking to try Grill Plug for the first time. Marvellous!

This is not the first time a chicken burger has blown me away and I have a feeling we are going to see chicken burgers pop up more around Cambridge.

Next up was the ‘cheese burger loaded box’ and the ‘chicken tenders’ which came served in a yellow box.

The cheese burger loaded box is an entire balanced meal in one with 2 x 2oz of smashed Angus beef, your choice of chips, grilled onions, American cheese, lettuce, and gerkins drizzled with smash sauce.

Top: Cheese Burger Loaded fries. Bottom: Chicken tenders

As the name suggests, it’s a cheese burger in a box, which makes it significantly more portable and easier to eat on the go. It comes to £12 but it also comes with a soft drink included. You can add extra meat for £2.50 but I felt the box itself came with enough for a meal.

Top: Ranch sauce. Bottom: chicken tenders

The chicken tenders were another highlight of the meal for me. They come in a pack of 8 and are fried in buttermilk for that extra tenderness and tangy flavour. These were some of the juiciest and most succulent chicken tenders I have ever had. They were so thick and meaty but also slavered with a delicious sauce that really brought them to life.

Big, thick, juicy, succulent, and delicious chicken tenders. 😍

I was unable to finish the box myself, so I brought some home to my wife. She microwaved them for her dinner and they still weren’t remotely dry. A sign of quality chicken.

I would also like to point out that their ranch sauce was absolutely superb. According to the owner Zak, these are one of their biggest seller, so clearly I’m not the only one who thinks so. I can’t put my finger on what it is, it looks ordinary in every way but it has such a bold flavour. Absolutely perfect for dipping chicken tenders or putting in your burger which was what brought the ‘Spicy Chick’ burger to life.

Their 12oz milkshakes are fantastic too. They come in a variety of flavours ranging from Ferrero Rocher to Kinder Bueno to Baklava. And yes, there is even a Jammy Dodger flavour! 🤣 These are all topped up with thick cream and served with a biodegradable straw. Mine was absolutely fantastic!

I ended my meal(s) with a selection of ‘Mars Bar Brownies’. These solid slabs of pure indulgence are all made in house and come to £3.50 each. You are also given other dessert options such as red velvet cheese cake, salted caramel blondie cheese cake, and lotus cheese cake.

Once again I am thoroughly impressed with Grill Plug. They really are one of the shining beacons for burgers in Cambridge. Better still, they will deliver to an 8 mile radius making it available to people as far out as Waterbeach. Everything I had today feels like a much more refined and tweaked version of everything I had back in January. There is no doubt that they will be moved further up my burger league table!

Cheers!
