Overused foodie terms that cut through me like a knife

As it’s the festive season and things are a little quiet during that timeless period between Christmas and new year, I have decided to have a little fun and share some of the most agonising, overused, and annoying phrases I come across every single day in the social media foodie scene.

* This is satire, don’t take it too seriously.

Lalbagh Indian restaurant – Bourn

“Hidden gem”

If there is a more overused term in this game, I haven’t heard it. I have seen “hidden gem” used for huge restaurants in the centre of a busy city centre that take up an entire corner of a street. Let’s wind it back a little, shall we? 🤣

Moist 🤢

This word makes me think of many things but not a single one is something I am willing to stick on my dinner plate! 😱

Just, no!

Transcendent 🙄

Your scotch egg is transcendent? 🤣

Might you be overstating it a little?

Juic’it Up, Mill Road

“Food porn”

You really don’t want to be associating the two, mate. 🫣

“Mouth feel”

It explains what you are trying to describe, I guess, but it is such a clunky and weird way of describing texture?

Vibe

Yeah yeah, I know, I use it occasionally myself and sometimes it is appropriate but it’s such a trendy young people word and it makes me feel like the dried up old fossil I really am.

“Deconstructed”

The word chefs use when they can’t be arsed to put the dish together properly.

And of course, the elephant in the room…”Foodie”

Unsurprisingly, I don’t have an issue with the term foodie itself. It’s just a word that is used to describe anyone who is passionate about food. Where the problem lies is people’s interpretation of it and the way it is used to gatekeep. You can be a foodie who loves to try all the latest fast food joints as much as you can be a foodie who is strictly gourmet.

Have I missed any? What are your annoying foodie buzz words?
