Byron Burger has a good reputation across Cambridge. I often see fellow foodies in our community recommend them over other popular burger joints in the city.

I remember visiting back in 2016 and 2018, where my friend and I were impressed with our experience. In a struggling industry with restaurants closing all the time, it says a lot that Byron has been able to stand proud at the same location for all those years.

Tonight, I had the pleasure of visiting again to explore their menu and see what has changed since my last visit (after all, it has been nearly 6 years 😱)
Frankly, it hasn’t. And that’s no bad thing. It is still a practical place, with the exact same chairs and layout. It’s good to see that the disabled access is still excellent too ♿

One of my favourite things about Byron Burger is the beautiful view of St John’s from the window. It’s a great place for people watching with a scenic Cambridge back drop.

We studied the menu which is found through a QR code placed on each table. You can order with your phone and pay through their website. There is a really strong vegan menu that is nearly as big as the beef and chicken options.
We ordered the following…
• Mac n cheese
• Tater tots
• BBQ chicken burger
• A burger from their “build your own burger” section.

The “build your own burger” is exactly what you would expect. You customise your burger to your exact specifications by ticking boxes on the app. This is more than adding pickles or choosing your cheese however, you can really go to town on it. I decided to push the limits on what I could do (for the purpose of the review, of course! 😂).
As it turns out, you can really play the mad scientist with it and create a 4 storey monstrosity of a burger that is so big that it slightly leans to one side, like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
⚠️ The team at Byron will call your buff and not try and talk you out of it. They will also offer no help with unhinging your jaw to take a bite 😂
The burger was a lot of fun and I enjoyed being able to customise it. The maple bacon was a particular highlight, adding a slight sweetness that cut through an otherwise smokey burger. I found the beef patties to be of an average quality and slightly dry in texture. This was mitigated somewhat by the offering of a delicious sauce that I highly recommend to anyone visiting, the beef dripping mayo. Delicious!

According to the team, the most popular burger on their list is the BBQ Chicken. You get the option to order this however you like it, so I made the chicken buttermilk fried.
This. Was. Amazing!

The chicken was incredibly crispy with a lovely succulent texture. The BBQ chicken was so big that it was pointing out of the bun in all directions! We were both in agreement that this was the highlight of the evening.

The macaroni and cheese was incredible. It was so creamy and smooth with a portion that was big enough to share between 2-3 people, which I thought was good going for a side.

The tater tots were cute, crispy, and tasty. The portion could do with being a bit bigger as they didn’t last long between the two of us but I couldn’t fault the execution, especially with beef dripping mayo sauce. Unlike the macaroni and cheese, these felt like a standard side portion for one.
Conclusion

Byron Burger hasn’t changed a bit. It still looks exactly the same and offers some excellent burgers. I highly recommend trying their Buttermilk BBQ Chicken and macaroni and cheese. Burger puritans may feel a little flat about their beef patties but vegans are going to be pleased with the wide selection for them on their menu.
I think the Buttermilk BBQ Chicken has earned a spot on my burger league table 🤫
