Mr Taco – St Ives Market 🇲🇽

I’ve been eating tacos again…

My son and I were mooching around the St Ives market this weekend and stumbled across Mr Taco. A popular Mexican street food van that also has a shop located on Mill Road.

Looking at the menu, you get all the classics you would expect from a Mexican food van, ranging from tacos, quesadillas, tortas, nachos, salads and burritos.

Gluten free and vegan options are also available.

Everything on the menu is £10, except for the “super large burrito” for £15. This makes the menu nice and simple.

Filling choices

As seen above, you get your choice of fillings, giving you the chance to customise your favourite Mexican dishes to your liking.

We ordered a portion of nachos, tacos, and a super large burrito. You may think that this is a lot for two people (and it was) but we were really keen to explore the menu while we had the chance.

Also, I couldn’t leave without trying the burrito. I needed to know how big it was. It’s that’s the sort of thing that would keep me up at night for weeks on end 😂

Nachos

I’ll be honest, my first impressions on the nachos weren’t great. As you can see from the picture above, it looks like a big container of chips with cheese lightly sprinkled on top.

Once I got digging a little deeper, the nachos started to reveal an underbody of guacamole, sour cream and salsa with a whole lot more cheese. That’s more like it!

Having the sauces underneath actually makes a lot more sense when you think about how you eat nachos, as otherwise left with nothing underneath as you eat the top layer.

The chips were very nice and the sauces were a good size. I thought the guacamole was one of the strongest examples I have had in a long while, though I was not entirely sure about the grated cheese, I think I would have preferred melted cheese but this is just personal preference.

I struggled with the idea of the nachos costing £10. The rest of the dishes today were good value but this felt more like a dish that should have been slightly cheaper, maybe in the £6-7 region?

Pulled pork tacos

The tacos come in a box of 3 and are served in a soft shell wrap. I opted for the pulled pork tacos which came with cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. We were given an option of spice level which was a nice touch.

I thought £10 was a fair deal. The tacos were delicious, held together really well, were easy to eat on the go, and the lettuce added a satisfying crunch. The pulled pork was absolutely fantastic and had such a juicy rich flavour that really brought the tacos to life.

The super large burrito

My son and I decided to split this monster burrito between us. The chaps were happy to pack it half and half, so I ordered chicken and chorizo on my side and my boy ordered pulled pork.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t cut in half, so we had to butcher it with a fork to divide it, which made it a bit of a mess eating it on a park bench. This also made photos of the inside difficult.

The burrito is stuffed with rice and uses two whole wraps to put together. It was well packed, kept its structural integrity together which is important when eating from a food van. Obviously, it was bloody big and certainly didn’t disappoint in that department. Ordering this on your own would easily be a meal for even the hungriest of people and it clearly justified its £15 price tag.

We asked for this hot but we didn’t find it very spicy but otherwise it was a fantastic dish and my personal highlight of the Mr Taco experience. It’s a must try!

Conclusion

Advert – Sushi & Salad, Ely

Both my son and I were in agreement that Mr Taco was a great addition to St Ives market. St Ives has many great places to eat but the town doesn’t have anything like this in the area. The food is all executed well and the staff team is friendly and chatty.

You’ll certainly see me back here again.
