Dulcedo Social bakery @ Eddington Square

Eddington has really been impressing me lately. After my visit to Pizzcia, which I recently dubbed as serving some of the best pizza in Cambridgeshire, my expectations for the area have shot right up. Following my review of Grain Culture over in Ely, a few people reached out to tell me that Dulcedo Social might actually be the best bakery around. Wouldn’t that be something special? Two of the best foodie locations sitting in one single neighbourhood. Naturally, I had to head over to investigate for myself.

Positioned right in the heart of Eddington square, the bakery itself is entirely wrapped in glass walls, catching all the natural light and making it a surprisingly bright, airy, and welcoming spot to sit back and relax. Better yet, being here means you can enjoy a coffee and pastry without battling city-centre traffic. While there is on-street parking nearby (free for the first hour if you log into a horrible parking app), leaving your car in the Sainsbury’s car park is by far the easiest shout.

It was nearly 1pm by the time I arrived and everyone knows that you have to get to a bakery early in order to get the widest selection – so pickings were slim. Despite this, there were some great options to choose from.

The Pastries

First up was the banana Danish, and it was absolutely fantastic. Super crispy on the outside, perfectly sweet, and finished off with a very generous dusting of powdered sugar. It was a good size and tasted great.

Now, I usually struggle to get excited about Nutella, but their Nutella pastry was stunning. Biting into it really showed off the contrast – soft and light on the inside, wrapped in a strong, flaky exterior that made it sturdy enough for a proper dunk in my matcha.

Guinness Stout Cake

I also gave their Guinness stout cake a go, and it was well worth a try. The sponge was beautifully rich, topped with a lovely creamy layer. It delivers an incredibly rich, proper punch of flavour – definitely one for anyone who loves a deep, indulgent bake.

The One That Got Away

I was absolutely gutted to miss out on their focaccia, which sold out literally as I reached the front of the queue. I spotted a slab of it on the table next to me across the room and it looked absolutely mega. It was a proper tease, but it just gives me the perfect excuse to head back again very soon! I arrived at around 1pm, so if you are looking to visit specifically to catch some focaccia then this is around the time they usually run out.

Well worth a visit

Dulcedo Social is another feather in the cap of Eddington. With Pizzcia being one of my favourite pizzas places in Cambridgeshire, it is a great place to visit for foodies. Whether you are looking for a quiet coffee bathing in natural light, a fresh pastry, or brunch in the sun in their outdoor seating area with friends, it is well worth taking a short trip out of the city centre to check them out. This is an exceptional bakery and café.

Is it the best bakery in Cambridgeshire though? It is hard to say without trying their focaccia but I think my favourite is still Grain Culture.
