The best steak joints in Cambridge, written by a local

People ask me for the best steak joint in Cambridge all the time.

And the truth? There are some great options available in our city but it all depends on what you want from a steak.

With that in mind, I have broken up my hand picked favourites into different categories.

The list is ongoing as I explore more steak throughout the city and this list will be update frequently, so make sure to head back and check it out.

The Best Premium Steak 🥇

Kobe, Bridge Street

If money is no object and you are looking for ultra premium steak then Kobe Steakhouse is the undisputed champion of Cambridge.

As an official member of the Kobe Beef Association in Japan, their sourcing is second to none, featuring everything from high-marbling cuts to authentic A5+ Japanese Wagyu. While the à la carte menu firmly sits in special-occasion price point, their £28 three-course weekday lunch deal makes this level of quality surprisingly accessible. With its refined atmosphere and incredible meat quality, it is the ultimate option when you want to blow the bloody doors off on a premium meal.

Best Value Steak 🫰

Flat Iron, Market Passage

Flat Iron is the ultimate answer when you want a top-quality steak without having to remortgage your house to pay for it. Based in the heart of the city, their simple, no-nonsense concept focuses on smaller, highly marbled cuts sourced ethically from small farms. The signature flat iron steak is marvellously seasoned, succulent, and full of bold flavour – though if you fancy treating yourself, their wagyu is unreal. Add in their phenomenally moreish free beef dripping popcorn while you wait, their incredible crispy bone marrow garlic mash, and a free ice cream on your way out, and it feels like stepping back in time to when eating out didn’t cost an absolute fortune. It is casual, vibrant, and easily the best budget-friendly steak joint in Cambridge.

Best experience 🥳

Mina ‘Pan Asian’ (previously Mina Steakhouse)

Mina Pan Asian is the uncontested champion for pure, unadulterated showmanship. Jay has shifted gears from a predominantly steakhouse-focused restaurant to a high-energy, nightclub-style spot with an unmatched theatrical presentation. Think dry ice mist and flaming candy floss bubbles with your food – a dream location for people who love to share their food on social media or enjoy a bit of flair with friends at the table. It sits at a premium price point, but the electric atmosphere and sheer menu variety make it the ultimate spot for a lively celebration.

Best all-rounder ⚖️

Maison Du Steak, Hills Road

La Maison Du Steak on Hills Road is the ultimate crowd-pleaser for a solid, hearty meal suitable for any occasion. This family-run independent combines a cosy, traditional steakhouse feel with a massive menu – covering everything from 35-day Himalayan salt-aged beef to rotisserie chicken, lamb shanks, and solid veggie options.

Their 950g tomahawk steak is incredible value for Cambridge and they even serve Cambridge made Calverley’s beer making this my personal top choice for a steak in the city.

One you might not have considered 🤔

Mercado Central, Green Street

Mercado Central on Green Street might be famous for its Spanish cuisine, but their ribeye steak easily earns a spot on my list. Sourced from grass-fed cattle, it is a proper, substantial cut that isn’t afraid to keep some fat on it for maximum flavour. What really makes it work is the marrow butter on top – adding a proper rich, savoury hit as it melts into the meat – alongside a smoky Mojo Rojo sauce and crisp patatas. Cooked to a spot-on medium-rare, it proves that a top-notch Spanish restaurant can deliver a quality steak just as well as any dedicated steakhouse in town. If you want a fantastic steak in a gorgeous Green Street townhouse, it’s well worth a look.

Steak worth travelling for 🚗

Johnson’s of Old Hurst, Old Hurst

I know a good steak is worth travelling for, so do yourself a favour and head towards Huntingdon to the village of Old Hurst for the ultimate Cambridgeshire steakhouse. Most people know Johnson’s for the farm shop, butchery, and the zoo, but their purpose-built, rustic, two-storey steakhouse is the stuff of legends. Because 80% of their meat comes straight from their own fields and on-site butchery, they know meat inside out – where it comes from, how to handle it, and how to cook it properly without any unnecessary gimmicks. We ordered a straightforward 10oz rump steak as a baseline test, and it came out executed with absolute precision. Paired with proper thick-cut chips and a friendly, down-to-earth countryside service, it proves you don’t need fancy sauces or flair when the sourcing is this good. If you want top-tier, field-to-fork local beef cooked by people who genuinely know what they are doing, it is well worth the trip out of town.

More than just a novelty 😎

Nelore Brazilian Steakhouse, Newmarket

Nelore in Newmarket brings something to the local steak scene that has been missing for years: the authentic Brazilian Rodizio experience. Unlimited Aberdeen Angus beef is carved directly from swords to plate, and though this might sound like a gimmick, Nelore proves it is far more than just a novelty factor.

For a fixed fee, you get an unlimited parade of top cuts – including ribeye, sirloin, bavette, and rump cap, all cooked alongside pork, lamb, and spicy chorizo. The self-service buffet isn’t just an afterthought either; it is packed with fresh salads, a velvety house mushroom sauce, and an incredible beef ragu with creamy polenta that rivals made-to-order dishes. Backed up by electric, insanely welcoming staff and a guaranteed ticket to leaving utterly stuffed, it delivers fantastic quality meat alongside a lively, fun atmosphere that makes it well worth stepping over the Suffolk border for.
