Food Van: Eat Greek 🇬🇷

I am back at one of the biggest and best food van hubs in the Cambridge area – Northstowe.

Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

When I saw that ‘Eat Greek’ was visiting, I stopped everything and made a beeline for it. I’m a big fan of Greek food and it is actually my wife’s favourite cuisine but we rarely see it in the area. We had to take advantage of this opportunity while we could!

The menu comes with the usual culprits – gyros and wraps, with sausage, lamb, kofta, or chicken (all for ÂŁ9.50). Also available was Greek salad, Tzatziki, meat trays, halloumi and chips. Prices were competitive, with gyros from Hungrill in Cambridge being about the same.

Naturally, I got caught up in the moment and ordered EVERYTHING (I blame the Greek music that was playing from their speaker). I came home with a sausage gyros, a lamb gyros, Greek salad, chips and halloumi. Yes, it was completely over the top for two people but I didn’t care, how often do you get Greek food out this way?

Left: Sausage gyros Right: Lamb gyros

It was about a twenty minute drive back home in the 5pm rush hours traffic but all the food travelled really well. I was a little worried that the pita bread would be soggy or lukewarm upon returning but everything turned out fine. Don’t be afraid to travel for Eat Greek!

My initial thought was that the gyros were slightly smaller than ones from Tzatziki and Hungrill but I actually found them to be a more manageable size, which made it easier to eat (especially when eating on the go). No unhinging your jaw for this dinner!

The chips in the gyros were lightly spiced and came with Tzatziki sauce, onions, and tomatoes, which all came together to give that true Greek freshness and flavour in one. Both the sausage and the lamb were both prepared really well, with the lamb being juicy yet crispy at the same time.

The sausage gyros came with two thin sausages in the middle, making sure there was some in every bite. Both meats were combined with crispy chips and onions which added a crunchy bite that had a bit of everything. It was beautiful!

The Greek salad was a little flat. It came with tomato, black olives, green pepper, tomato, and onion and was drowned in oil. I couldn’t fault the freshness of the vegetables and the portion was a fair size but both my wife and I didn’t feel particularly inspired by it. By the time we had finished with the salad there was an inch of oil at the bottom.

The chips came in a medium portion generously covered in grated feta cheese. This is something I have never had before but I really enjoyed how the feta held itself together and clung to the chips. The chips were nice and crispy which worked well on a texture level with the soft fluffiness of the cheese. It was unusual but I liked it!

The halloumi sticks or “squeaky cheese” came with a portion of chips. They were cut into thick chunks and served with Tzatziki. I found them to be a versatile addition to the meal that could accompany any dish or be used for dipping into the Tzatziki alone.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our first Eat Greek experience at Northstowe. It is great to finally get Greek food north of Cambridge and being a food van this made prices competitive. The gyros were lovely and ticked all the boxes of what I like. If you are into Greek food then it is definitely worth a visit. I know that I will be back!
