Tzatziki @ The Royal Standard 🇬🇷

It was my step dads birthday this week, so it was his pick of restaurants. Ever since our trip to Tzatziki last year, he has been obsessed with it ever since, visiting almost weekly.

Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

For those of you unaware, Tzatziki is a Greek restaurant located at The Royal Standard pub on Mill Road. The Tzatziki team offers (in my opinion) the best Greek food in the city and the Royal Standard provides a wide selection of imported and international beers. What a combination! 👍

The pub is stunning and full of character. Their beer selection is also one of the best in Cambridge. I decided to order a pint from the local brewery ‘Nene Valley’ called ‘Release The Chimps’. I was quite taken by the depth of flavour it had for a 4.4% beer.

The Royal Standard has a lovely beer garden with patio heaters that made a surprisingly cold June much more bearable. You are given a QR code on each table that brings up the menu on your phone.

There is a compulsory service charge (approximately 8-10%) included on the bill. I couldn’t see a way of taking it off, so make sure this is factored in when you budget. The quality of the food justifies the cost but it isn’t cheap, so having that extra charge on top may make a difference to some.

I ordered the Greek sausage souvlaki. This is a Greek pork and mixed herb sausage served in pitta bread with tomato, lettuce, red onion, spiced chips and tzatziki.

Packed!

The souvlaki was a thing of absolute beauty. It was a generous portion and was truly packed. Everything inside was to a high standard with lots of diverse colours and flavours. It was an exciting dish in every sense of the word. I couldn’t recommend it enough!

The greek salad came with tomato, red onion, green pepper, olives, capers, virgin olive oil, oregano & fresh Greek feta. It was a visual feast as much as it was fresh and delicious. The olives were pipped but were meaty and juicy.

The slow roasted pork box comes with pork belly that has been roasted overnight, with crackling in pitta bread, tomato, lettuce, red onion, chips and a big dollup of tzatzik.

The pork box was a huge portion with the pork having a nice crispyness. Best of all, the greens do not come as a small garnish on the plate but an entire bowl on the side, essentially giving you an extra dish. Bravo!

One of my favourite dishes from Tzatziki are the halloumi sticks. I have been thinking of these ever since my last visit back in 2023. These come as a set of four and are the best examples of halloumi sticks I have EVER had. They are big, crispy, stringy and delicious. Perfect for dipping into the tzatziki (though they come with a pot of chilli sauce). These are amazing!

Conclusion

Advert – Sushi & Salad

My family and I were all in agreement that Tzatziki is incredible. It was a lovely afternoon sitting in the Royal Standard beer garden enjoying the sun, eating great food, and drinking quality beer. This is what summer is all about and I have a sneaking feeling that we will be back again.

I recommend you give them a try too!
