Mudey’s Chicken Burgers, Mill Road

“AD” – Why is this here?

Another day, another burger joint opens up in Cambridge. Stepping into the former ‘Juic’it Up’ site on Mill Road is Mudey’s, a new takeaway offering a more focused menu of fried chicken burgers, milkshakes, and loaded fries.

As a devoted fried chicken enthusiast who has previously drawn criticism for placing a chicken burger in the top tier of my Cambridge Burger Rankings, I was keen to discover what Mudey’s had to offer. Especially since the local competition is fierce, with established names like Wonky Kitchen, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Grill Plug, and Buren all nearby. This high bar of quality made me eager to see if Mudey’s could successfully stand out on Mill Road.

Outdoor seating and menu

Although primarily a takeaway, Mudey’s offers a small amount of seating out the front. They are also investing in patio heaters to keep the seating area comfortable as the colder months approach.

Their delivery range is genuinely impressive, boasting a radius that stretches an unbelievable TEN MILES! 😱

The menu itself is packed with choices, featuring a dedicated dessert list alongside an ambitious line-up of 13 Loaded Fries and 12 burger creations. Crucially, the pricing offers good value with their entry-level burger coming in at just under £9, giving them a competitive edge over local rivals.

Korean BBQ Loaded Fries

The “Korean-Kick’n BBQ” loaded fries come packed with mozzarella cheese, Korean BBQ sauce, jalapeños, and generous chunks of buttermilk fried chicken.

While the portions were modest, I certainly couldn’t fault the presentation, specifically the spectacular cheese pull from the mozzarella, which stretched out a good foot long! Using mozzarella was a clever and appreciated touch.

The thin-cut chips were generously topped with crispy chicken pieces. However, the sauce, though undeniably tasty, was the weak link. It lacked the nuanced, punchy flavour of true Korean BBQ, instead tasting like a thicker, more generalised generic BBQ dressing. I especially enjoyed the thick-cut jalapeños, which were more like cubes than slices, adding a crunchy textural element.

Despite being advertised as spicy, the dish provided very little heat. Overall, while certainly tasty, it wasn’t quite the authentic flavour experience I was anticipating.

Algerian Flame Burger

Tipped by the staff as “one of our best,” I had to sample the signature Algerian Flame Burger. Nestled in a cheese bun, the build included American sauce, crispy buttermilk fried chicken, lettuce, mayo, onion, and gherkins.

It was a modestly sized but delicious burger, characterised by a generous, almost overwhelming amount of sauce. This abundance delivered a creamy, lush texture and a satisfying crunch, bursting with vibrant flavour but be warned: the sauce profile means the flavour of the chicken was slightly eclipsed – a detail that will either delight or divide diners, depending on how you like your burger.

Mudey’s Signature Chicken Burger

The Mudey’s Signature Burger offered a similar size and presentation but swapped components for chipotle mayo, coleslaw, and their own signature sauce. It delivered an even smoother texture, yet remained equally sauce-heavy. Both burgers were wonderfully indulgent but a genuinely messy feast, so keep the napkins on standby!

Brownie

The Pistachio Almond Brownie was bloody lovely – a perfect comforting finale on a cold autumn evening. It arrived in a warm bowl, filled with an impossibly soft, gooey centre that melted delightfully in my mouth.

Milkshake

My guest’s Ferrero Rocher Milkshake was vigorously blended into a smooth consistency, leaving no trace of chunks. It was gorgeously thick – so much so that it presented a serious challenge even to the large-bore straw.

Great on the go!

Mudey’s is a small but well formed takeaway, ideally located for a quick bite while passing through Mill Road. While portions are generally modest, they are slightly cheaper to reflect this.

Ultimately, this spot is perfectly suited for a lunchtime treat or for the fried chicken enthusiast seeking good value burger without the burden of a monster appetite. If you’re a seasoned ‘foodie’ hunting for boundary-pushing innovation or colossal portions, Mudey’s is probably not your destination. However, for a dependable burger on the go, it certainly hits the mark.
