Tzatziki @ Hudson’s Ale House, Trumpington

“ad” – Why is this here?

I don’t get to Trumpington nearly enough, so I was delighted to pop by Hudson’s Ale House on the High Street to visit one of my favourite places for Greek food in Cambridge – Tzatziki.

We are not blessed with an abundance of Greek restaurants in Cambridge, with only a handful of locations available (and two of them actually being the same business), which is a shame as it is one of my favourite types of cuisine. I have been to their Royal Standard location on Mill Road numerous times but had never managed to visit the new one in Trumpington. I even listed them in my best places to eat in Cambridgeshire feature, so I was excited to see how the new spot shaped up.

The Pub

The pub operates as a separate business, with Tzatziki running inside from the back kitchen just like at the Royal Standard. Hudson’s Ale House is a good pub in its own right, with free parking in the back and some great beers. It is clearly a popular spot, as from the minute it opened at noon (on a Tuesday afternoon, none the less), the place filled up fast.

That’s the spirit, Trumpington! 🤣

The Menu

Tzatziki serves Greek street food, making it ideal for pub dining or grabbing on the go. The menu is massive with plenty of options available, including large sharing platters that make a cracking choice for mates to split while sinking a few beers.

Expect moussaka, souvlaki, skepasti (gyros quesadilla), and proper fresh salads.

Souvlaki

photo taken during my last visit

Their signature dish is the souvlaki. This bad boy was absolutely stuffed to the brim with spicy chips, red onion, lettuce, and tomato, with your choice of chicken, pork, sausage, or lamb. Better still, you can mix it up and have both pork and lamb in the same wrap, allowing you to completely customise it.

In a vain attempt to be on some sort of diet, I ordered chicken but completely undermined it with a pint of Guinness (🤦‍♂️ I don’t know why I bother sometimes!).

I love everything about the souvlaki: the huge portion, the variety of textures and flavours, the freshness and colour of the salad, the crispiness of the chips, and the succulence of the chicken. It is a dish that simply has it all.

Beef Cheek Stifado Pie

I cannot recommend these little gems enough. Beef cheek can so easily turn tough if it isn’t treated right, so getting it that tender is a genuine accomplishment – bravo!

Packed with that incredible meat, caramelised onions, and gooey gouda cheese, all wrapped up in crispy filo pastry, it starts with a light and delicate flaky skin that gives way to a soft, juicy, and rich middle that has me still thinking about it while writing this review. Absolutely beautiful!

The Best Halloumi Sticks

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the halloumi sticks at Tzatziki are elite. Extra thick and crispy with a lovely soft centre, they are brilliant on their own, great for sharing too, and versatile enough for scooping up whatever else you’ve got on the table. I recommend using them with the tzatziki but there are loads of other options on the cold meze part of the menu that are ideal for this.

Loukoumades

I ended on a massive high with these Greek doughnuts drenched in an incredibly moreish Greek honey. Utterly delicious! I even caught the guy behind the bar munching on some during his break, proving that even when you are around this food all day every day, they never get old.

Still got it! 😎

If you are desperate to inject some sun back into your life now the weather has turned miserable, the best way to do it is with a proper hit of Greek food. Overall, I could not fault a thing, and everything was just as delicious as I remember. It is brilliant to see that the high standards from Mill Road have carried right over to the new Trumpington kitchen. With free parking right out the back, it is well worth travelling for too. If you fancy some proper comfort food in a cracking local pub, head down to the high street and check them out.
