Peking Restaurant – Homerton Street

Another day, another restaurant. My friend and I were in the mood for Chinese food so decided to pop into Peking Restaurant. This is tucked away down Homerton Street so can be easily missed when driving past. This must be a restaurant for the students in the area, as without a blue badge you won’t parking anywhere close by. Even if you go by train then it’s going to be a 20 minute walk from the station.

The interior is very basic and uninspiring but perfectly practical and very spacious. The tables were equipped with dinner turn tables which made sharing food easier and more fun.

When I say that the restaurant was here for Cambridge students, I was not kidding! Prices were incredibly high! With Hakka hovering around ÂŁ12-15 for dishes and Spring Chinese Restaurant going as low as ÂŁ7 a dish, Peking was charging a staggering ÂŁ15-16 a dish! A friend of mine works in the student dorms next door and she says it is filled with mostly legacy kids and children of diplomats, so money is no object for them and I feel that Peking is acutely aware of this.

That said, the price may be high but their pork sweet and sour dish was very nice. Worth the price? That’s another question.

If money is no object and you live within close proximity then Peking Restaurant could be the place for you. Frankly, with its awkward location, high prices, and very bland interior, I feel this is just another Cambridge student dumping ground which is here to serve a very specific democratic in the city. The food was perfectly good but the cost seems very steep, especially considering that it’s not even in the centre of the city.

What do you think? Have you been? I’d love to know what your opinions are on the Cambridge Foodies.
