Pizza Passione – Trumpington Meadows

I met up with Cambridge Foodies moderator Monique to tick another box on our Simon’s Quest pizza journey.

Tonight, we hit Pizza Passione. An Italian style pizza food van that had been running since 2016. We found it at Trumpington Meadows, a popular place for food vans in the area, just off the M11.

All pizzas are hand-made in a wood-fired oven. They also take great pride in their sourcing with nearly everything coming directly from Italy. Their vegetables are locally sourced and traditional 00 flour is used straight from Naples.

I was interested to learn that they use biga dough on their pizzas. This is a more durable dough, making it possible for the base to be thinner, lighter, and crisper without giving up on its structural integrity. It also means that the base has a deeper and more complex flavour than regular yeast.

Their bases are vegan and you can also request gluten free, if required. You can also get vegan cheese.

There are 7 options on the board, along with unspecified vegan options. I was in a really spicy mood, so I decided to go for the ‘spicy calabrese’ for £10. Since there were two of us we also ordered a ‘double pepperoni’ for £12.

Double pepperoni

Both pizzas came out in no time. The double pepperoni was true to its name and was generously covered in pepperoni. The biga style pizza base was light, crispy, and held together well, as expected. The toppings were cooked perfectly and we were both in agreement that this was our favourite pizza of the two.

Spicy calabrese

The spicy calabrese was served with onion, pepperoni and what I think was a chilli jam. The pizza were very pleasant and tasted great but I failed to feel even a remote hint of spice from my calabrese pizza. This didn’t ruin the pizza mind as it was demolished with complete satisfaction.

Both Monique and I enjoyed our experience with Pizza Passione. The service was friendly and prompt, the pizza tasted great, and it is always reassuring to know that the pizzas are authentic with real attention paid to the ingredients. This is a place that should please everyone but may fail to excite a few foodies out there, especially people who enjoy a fiery kick like myself.
