Royal Spice 5 – Consistent quality

Can you believe that it’s my fifth review of Royal Spice? And that only counts reviews, I have been coming here longer than I can remember. I dread to think how many times I have actually ordered from here 😂

Advert – Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

Why Royal Spice, you ask? There are many great takeaways in Cambridge but Royal Spice is one of the most consistent around. Granted, it helps to have it be located in the north of Cambridge which is closer to my home but it is a takeaway that has always served me well and rarely let’s me down.

We ordered a range of dishes tonight to celebrate my son getting good grades. This included the chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloo, king prawn jhalfrezi, saag aloo, egg rice, pilau rice, mushroom rice, a peshwari and a garlic naan, lamb tikka chops, and tandoori chicken wings.

Lamb tikka chops
Tandoori chicken

Both the tandoori chicken wings and the lamb tikka chops were first rate. The lamb especially was so tender and flavorful. Portions were good for the cost coming to £5.50 and 6.50 each.

The star of the show tonight was the lamb vindaloo. It had a beautiful smokey red colour and was served SMOKING HOT…as it damn well should be! So many Indian restaurants try to pass off mild curries as a vindaloo and it really gets my goat. Not here though, they respect the way of the vindaloo and as a result has a real feisty kick to it. Bravo!

The lamb was also exceptional. It was so tender and juicy with a gorgeous pink colour inside. I haven’t been this excited over a vindaloo in ages and it was one of the strongest examples I have seen. This is made even better as it came to a very reasonable £9.95. 👍

My son loved his chicken tikka masala. It was lovely and sweet with large chicken chunks. The saag ago was a fine addition with lovely soft potatoes and a reasonable portion of spinach to accompany them.

All the rice was done well. The pilau was a little anemic but the mushroom rice was beautiful with a deep flavour and a lovely earthy colour.

The king prawn jhalfrezi was a real winner too. I am not usually a big jhalfrezi fan but this had less of a sharp taste and was more generous on the sauce, which I liked. The king prawns themselves were also nice and juicy. The dish came to just under £15 but came with a generous amount of king prawn.

We ordered a few naans to accompany the meal. The garlic naan was decent enough and inoffensive but the peshwari really shined. It was very soft and fluffy with a lot of peshwari sweetness inside. A worthy naan to accompany a very heavy and savory meal.

Another order from Royal Spice, another satisfying meal.
