Checking out the craft beer @ Slingers, Cambridge

Slingers is a popular darts themed bar located by the Cambridge train station on Station Road. It is part of the Smokeworks restaurant that is well known for its BBQ food.

We weren’t here for the darts and BBQ however but for the wide range of local and craft beer. I was lucky enough to win a £50 voucher from one of their monthly Instagram competitions, so I decided to share the wealth by inviting the boys for a couple of pints on me.

Slingers has a great look with an industrial/street/urban feel. There is a selection of comfortable sofas in the bar area and some great looking graffiti style artwork on the walls. It’s a pleasant place to be and the guys (who often like to drink a beer or two and move on) ended up having about 5-6 rounds.

I counted 16 taps at the bar offering a selection of IPA’s, lagers, cider, and stouts.  There is something for everyone and I even caught eye of a few decent bourbons, like Elijah Craig.

You’ll likely notice several beers from local brewers ‘Brewboard’ and ‘Three Blind Mice’. The ever popular IPA ‘Juice Rocket’ made an appearance in keg form and something that sounds like a Brewboard exclusive for the Smokeworks restaurant, aptly named ‘Smokewerkz’. There is also a Czech style pilsner called ‘Czechm8’.

Prices hovered around £6-7 mark. This is to be expected in the centre of Cambridge, especially by the train station. The cheapest was an English lager called Kobold for £5.75.

The star of the evening for me was the Siren Expression Idaho 7. A lovely American IPA that was floral and tropical, coming in at a sessionable and rather accessible 5.2%. This was the most expensive beer on the menu coming in at £7.80 a pint.

I love it at Slingers. I think it may be one of my new favourite places for a beer in the city. It isn’t the cheapest place and it doesn’t have the widest selection of craft beers like some other places (for those more hardcore beer geeks) but there are still some great choices. For people like me who enjoy drinking from local breweries there are some great options and the bar is a really lively, stylish, and fun place to be. You can also have a game of darts and have some quality BBQ while you are at it!

It’s all about the overall experience!

Cheers
