Breakfast @ Station House – Histon

It was a sunny Saturday morning, so my son and I decided to spend a bit of quality time together and go for breakfast.

Station House has been on my radar for a while. People have spoken very highly of it on the Cambridge Foodies group for some time, so I thought it was about time I took the plunge to see what all the fuss was about.

In true Tompkins fashion, the moment my son and I arrived, the weather turned sour – Typical!

Station House is very popular and was fully booked on arrival, so make sure to plan if you are looking to visit (especially, if you have a 35-minute drive like me).

Luckily they have adequate seating outside, as long as you don’t mind the cold. Unfortunately, they had no heaters outside to mitigate this but it was well sheltered from the rain and a very pleasant place to sit. I can see this being perfect in the summer.

The menu was fantastic with a wide range of interesting dishes available (full menu here). Dishes that caught my eye were the traditional breakfast, eggs Benedict, Turkish eggs, waffles, and the boozy brunch.

It was great to see Hot Numbers coffee being served. According to the menu they use milk steamed at 60 degrees to preserve its natural sweetness. I also noticed Cambridge Juice Co. options available.

I spotted a small selection of craft beer, served in bottle form. Nothing too edgy for you craft beer puritans out there but quality enough to please the large majority of us.

Options included: Tiny Rebel’s ‘Club Tropica’, Budvar Czech beer (one of my favourites!), Beaver Town’s ‘Lazer Crush’ and ‘Neck Oil’.

My son ordered himself a salted caramel milkshake. This comes to £5.50 but if you order two of the same flavour then you save £1 (two for £10).

It was presented in a glass jar with a handle. Visually, it didn’t stand out as anything particularly special but my son said it tasted great. He commented that the salted caramel flavour was quite strong – just the way he likes it!

I ordered a Hot Numbers Americano that managed to hit the high standards expected from Hot Numbers.

After reading about their coffee being made at 60 degrees to preserve sweetness, I must admit, I didn’t expect it to make any difference but I could taste a subtle hint of sweetness, so clearly it worked.

I was very tempted to order the Turkish eggs but couldn’t resist the pull of the traditional breakfast.

The dish came to £12.75 and comes with streaky bacon, poached eggs, Lincolnshire sausage, black pudding, baked beans, roasted tomato, and mushrooms, all served on sourdough bread.

The quality of everything on the plate was top-notch. The eggs were executed to perfection, the sausage was simply beautiful, and the sourdough bread (something I’m not generally a big fan of) had a light and subtle sour flavour that didn’t overpower with a mild earthy taste. Even my son, who doesn’t allow the food to exist long enough to taste, made a comment about how much he liked it.

Look at that!

I usually insist on double everything on my fry up but I found this to be a satisfying portion, even with everything but the eggs being a single portion. A testament to quality ingredients. Quality over quantity people!

We ended our breakfast with dessert, so shared a waffle between the two of us. There’s nothing more English than eating a cold dessert while sitting in the cold and pissing rain 😂

That’ll teach me not to book ahead!

This little gem was the Biscoff waffle with vanilla ice cream. Both the crumble and sauce were official Biscoff and the dish came to a reasonable £6.75.

Both my son and I had no complaints and thoroughly enjoyed it. We found the portion to be a perfect size to share between the two of us.

We left the shelter of the outdoor seating area and made a run back to my car. It was a great breakfast and a place I could see myself returning to again. Everything was prepared well, the ingredients were quality, and there were a lot of locally sourced products.

I can see this being very popular in the summer, just make sure you book ahead!
