Xiao Spots: Lei Yue Mun, Hobson Street

I have been out scouting for more “Xiao Spots“. For those new to the series, these are the smaller, unassuming Asian eateries – usually Chinese – that fly completely under the radar. They have almost no online footprint and zero high street presence, which is exactly why they are so special. These are the places that students head to when they are craving a proper taste of home, offering the kind of genuine, authentic cooking that you just don’t find in your typical restaurant. It is exactly the kind of food that is supposed to be—unpretentious, honest, and absolutely brilliant.

Lei Yue Mun is a Cantonese and Hong Kong style noodle joint on Hobson Street. I wasn’t sure whether I should technically include them on my Xiao Spots list, as they have a small online presence with their own website and the restaurant itself stands quite proud on the street, but it definitely feels like it deserves a spot in the series. It’s not flashy but looks practical, great value, and I have already heard from the Cambridge Foodies community that it is damn good.

The interior is basic and unpretentious but gets the job done. There are some lovely views of Hobson Street and Sussex Street, making it a great place to grab some cheeky noodles while watching the world go by. If you are looking for a quick bowl of noodles on the go then this is the ideal place.

The staff themselves were absolutely lovely. The lady serving me was high energy and was so genuine. There was a bit of a language barrier during our visit, with a two minute discussion about ordering the can of fizzy drink I wanted. It’s no big deal and she worked really hard to make sure she understood my crude fenland accent, even if my 7up ended up as a Fanta after all that 🤣

Meal Deal!

I opted for the 3 for £11 deal, which is a brilliant way to sample what the kitchen can do for a set price. Given that most individual items hover around the £6–8 mark – with some stretching towards £9 – this deal is a proper bargain, potentially saving you just under £16.

Custard Buns

I started with dessert with a pair of Custard Buns. These little gems were the absolute highlight of the meal. It’s more of a dessert than a dumpling – steamed, incredibly soft, and stuffed with a rich, creamy centre. It’s simple, effective, and I could have happily eaten a dozen of them.

Pork Dumplings

The dumplings are listed in English as simply “pork dumplings” but are in fact Xio Long Bao style. They were small, well-presented, and fragrant. When I poked one with a chopstick, I was pleased to see that it didn’t squirt me in the eye with steaming hot dumpling water 🤣 They also passed the structural integrity test and held together well with my chopsticks. The skin was soft and tasted fresh while being well-sealed – a clear sign of a skilled pair of hands in the kitchen. They were packed tight with a punchy pork flavour that really cut through, something you often find lacking in more mass-produced versions.

Satay Chicken

The satay chicken skewers are simple but exactly what you want. Tender, juicy, and hitting that perfect balance of sweet and savoury.

Noodle Time!

For the main, I went for the pork belly soup noodle – a proper bowl of comfort food. The portion was huge, with an incredibly generous helping of tender pork belly cut into chunks on top. You could see the beautiful stripes from the layers of fat that really added flavour.

The noodles themselves were soft and flavourful. While they lacked that specific, bouncy springiness you find at a place like Two Treasures, they were still excellent in their own right. The broth was light, fragrant, and had a delicate flavour that didn’t jump out and shout at you, but it provided a balanced harmony throughout the bowl that allowed the quality of the noodles and pork to take centre stage. The bowl came out steaming hot, creating an unending amount of steam that kept fogging up my camera! 🤣 It is a clear sign that this was made fresh to order, not pre-cooked, which really speaks to their kitchen’s ethos.

The Verdict

I left Lei Yue Mun feeling full and satisfied, especially since I hadn’t broken the bank. The kitchen knows exactly what it is doing with nothing failing to hit the mark.
Every bite I had was spot on. The flavours are authentic, the value is fantastic, and the quality of the cooking genuinely surprised me. While you might not be coming here for a white-tablecloth experience, the food is beautiful. If you don’t mind a little patience with the service, you are going to leave with a smile on your face.
It’s a proper gem in the city centre, and it’s a spot I’ll be revisiting very soon.
