Anto burgers (food van) @ The Chequers, Sutton

It has been a long time coming but Sutton finally gets its first proper food van! 🥳

Lalbagh Indian restaurant, Bourn

The village has experienced a surge of life since the new owner took over The Chequers, with an exciting lineup of events planned for the pub in the coming months. The most exciting news is that the pub will start hosting food vans. This is something Sutton has missed out on for years, in my opinion, with other smaller villages already enjoying a variety of exciting and interesting cuisines from all over the world.

It was Good Friday and Anto Burgers was the first van to visit, offering smash burgers and chips in the car park around the back. I had never heard of it before but I was keen to give it a try so I could add it to my burger league table.

The menu

You’ll notice by looking at the menu that there is a hint of Italian flare with the ingredients. N’duja caught my eye but there was also pepperoni and mozzarella available too. All beef is “butcher quality” and sourced from Eric Tennant in Newmarket.

Mr Burger 🍔

I ordered the “Mr. Burger”, an impressive stack featuring two smash patties smothered in a blanket of smoked cheese, yellow and red peppers, and sweet onions, all nestled on top of a crown of peppery rocket. The pièce de résistance, however, was a huge dollop of spicy n’duja that looked absolutely incredible while slowly melting on top with a rich fiery colour.

I noticed that Anto cooked the burgers one order at a time, giving each customer his undivided love and attention. The patties were then placed next to his partner who then neatly organised the burger in the bun with the toppings. I was genuinely impressed at her methodical approach that allowed her to stack the burger in a way that tested the bun to its absolute limits without sacrificing its structural integrity.

In other words, the burgers at Anto’s were absolutely packed!

Taking a bite was like nothing I have tasted with a smash burger before. The nest of rocket was so thick that it gave a fresh peppery crunch, which was perfectly complimented by the juicy beef patties that melted into the American cheese until they were one delicious gooey bite. Superb!

As if this wasn’t incredible enough, the n’duja added a spicy flare of pork that invigorated the burger with a vivid red colour.

Pepper Burger

While waiting for my order, I managed to see the Pepper Burger being prepared. As with all the burgers at Anto Burger, it comes as a double beef patty but instead of American cheese the Pepper Burger comes with two mozzarella slices, pepperoni, lettuce, and chipotle mayo.

As previously stated, I was genuinely impressed with the way the burgers are loaded at Anto’s and the Pepper Burger was no exception. Look at the amount of pepperoni in this picture! 😍 Despite never getting to actually try this burger, you could tell by the colour and softness of the slices that this was going to be a belter!

Authentic Italian restaurant, Mill Road

Fried with bacon and cheese

The loaded fries were fairly standard but it also didn’t disappoint. I was particularly keen on the bacon which was cut into larger softer chunks than your typical bacon loaded fries. I think I prefer it this way to the smaller crispy bacon, especially as the bacon was very thick, almost like gammon, likely credited to the butcher quality meat.

The cheese was oh-so gooey in the way that loaded fries should be. Cheese puritans won’t like the fact it is American cheese but I didn’t care, this was trashy in all the right ways and gave it a wonderful texture.

A real foodie find!

Sushi & Salad, Ely

Anto Burgers doesn’t have a huge social media presence with Anto himself proudly stating that he is “old school” and “wants my burgers to travel by word of mouth”. I love this and think his burgers can definitely achieve local fame this way. Despite this, give his page a follow anyway and keep an eye out for his van that can be found at Newmarket, Red Lodge and The Taps, Waterbeach. You won’t be disappointed!
