Pizza @ Maurizio Dining & Co

As part of my quest to find the best pizza in Cambridge, I decided to quickly pop into ‘Maurizio Dining & Co’ on Mill Road for some authentic Italian pizza.

Maurizio’s has recently been recognised at the ‘2023 Italian Awards’ and won the Bronze Environment Award in 2022 from ‘Cambridge Sustainable Food’. So, I was really excited to see what all the fuss was about.

As this is not a full review, I did not take many pictures but the restaurant is incredibly quirky with lots of fun tributes to Italy everywhere you turn. It was an organised mess with a real character that you would only get with a small independent. I can really see why people like it here as it is a truly unique place with a bold cultural identity.

Pizzas hover between £12-18 with most of them in the £15-16.50 area. This puts them at around the average price for a pizza on Mill Road. Gluten free pizzas are available but they are not home made.

The pizzas at Maurizio are home made. The tomato sauce contains just 5 ingredients, is made fresh every day, and is then cooked for 5 hours.

Maurizio’s only uses ‘fior di latte‘ mozzarella on their pizzas which is made from Italian cows milk rather than buffalo. This is claimed to have a more sweet and delicate flavour with lower calories.

The more I read, the more I was getting excited!

Bring on the pizza!

With what will be no surprise to my wife, I picked the most expensive pizza on the menu, the Lord Orli. This monster of a pizza comes with gorgonzola cheese, home made tomato sauce, nduja, anchovies, capers, olives, and fried garlic.

Everything about this pizza is epic with one of the most generous portions of olives I have ever seen. The olives aren’t going to keep up with the quality of some other rival Italian pizzas (De Luca springs to mind) but there were so many that you had one for almost every bite 🤩

The flavours were bold and beautiful, mostly thanks to the gorgonzola cheese. The pizza base was thin, crispy, and perfectly cooked. For a pizza this size, I would have liked a few more anchovies but otherwise it was a flawless experience.

I also ordered a small glass of the house red to accompany it. I thought this paired up with my pizza really well due to its intense fruity and raspberry flavour. £7 for a small 175ml glass or £22 for a bottle.

I had a great time visiting Maurizio’s tonight. I can really see why this is such a popular place that has also attracted so much attention.

From the base to the sauce to the mozzarella, Maurizio’s has gone that extra mile on all the details which builds up to a beautiful example of what pizza can be. It has to be one of my favourites and I already have my eye on their ham and mushroom pizza on my return. If you are an Italian pizza purist then this will be right up your street!
